In branch on opening up my account details, the assistant found that there had been a note attached to my file stating I had rang head office.

Wow, that is impressive. Well done Skipton. All the others could learn a thing or two from them.

Yep- my partners appointment went well at Skipton yesterday. Although not opened there and then she was reassured it wouldn't be a problem. All paperwork and cheque photocopied twice (1 copy for branch, 1 for her to keep) and originals forwarded to Head Office to be credited there. Interest will be back dated to yesterday and she'll receive passbook etc in the post asap.

    Rebecca,

The branch was Newcastle upon Tyne.

I first rang the head office to confirm that they would accept the cheque. Which they said yes to, as long as I had a statement. I then asked if I could take the cheque to my local branch (I did not mention which one it would be).

In branch on opening up my account details, the assistant found that there had been a note attached to my file stating I had rang head office.

    Steve

Thanks very much for the info Steve...

Just to update people on my appointment at Nationwide today.

I filled out the application form and ISA transfer form with the branch advisor and she took a copy of my cheque, statements and the covering letter/Q&A from the administrators. This will be referred to their Head office – who are apparently referring cases to the FSCS for clarification.

So I still have my cheque – and I will wait and see what happens. But I should at least start earning interest from today – assuming it all goes smoothly.

The branch advisor was very friendly and helpful – and remembered the old FSCS certificate process from the Icesave days. But no one seems to have advised/trained them on the new system – presumably because this is the first case under the new system that has involved ISA transfer issues.

Hopefully I will be able to get rid of my cheque soon!:D

And a Nationwide Update from me too.

I have successfully opened an account and left my cheque with them, along with copies of all the relevant info from the administrators. I have a receipt for my deposit, and am told the account will be opened in branch and details sent out to me within the next 7-10 days.

So slightly more successful than MARTYM8 - we shall see if it all works!

Seems like there is no consistent approach – my branch advisor called the ISA team at NW HQ and was told just to photocopy all the information and send it to them. I already have an NW ISA open to transfer into – so in theory my application should have been easier.

So the issue doesn’t seem to be at branch level – its NW head office ISA staff who are advising different things.

I just want to get rid of the cheque – as I am getting paranoid I will lose it…..

I was told by Nationwide that they can only open ISAs for up to £15,240 in Branch, and that all transfers will be processed by their central ISA team. I was also told that they cannot open an ISA unless a deposit is made there and then.

Question to Bhamstudent: was your cheque for less than £15,240, and are you sure they will process it as a transfer, i.e. not counting towards your 2015-16 allowance?

This is utterly pathetic as by now the central Nationwide ISA team should know what to do when people come with FSCS cheques and a closing EBCU statement. They should not be turning people's original cheques away.

If I were you, I would raise formal complaint with Nationwide as in the end, they should compensate you for the entirely unreasonable runaround they are giving you.

No, the cheque is for more than the annual allowance (which hopefully means it cannot be put down as counting towards my 15/16 allowance - I also took my statement for my 15/16 ISA and we discussed it, so they know I've already deposited money into another account).

Today the guy at my branch phoned the ISA team and asked them if he could open the account in branch or had to send it off (he explained the circumstances) and they said he could open it in branch.

    I'm somewhat confused!
