I do have a photo on LinkedIn - as well as all information about my qualifications, experience, references etc etc as this is where I expect someone to possibly look.

FB is private, nothing to do with job ability and nothing for people to snoop about.

Just because one CAN do something, does not mean someone SHOULD.

Respect of privacy goes both ways - I would not want to work for someone who snoops on me, online or not.

Saying that - I never add work colleagues (current or past) on FB and I did come across a person who did and stupidly posted photos from Alton Towers while claiming to be sick and off work. So no "snooping" as such was involved, shot herself in the foot without anyone's help...

FB is not private unless you make it.

I know technically is not private but as I said - just because one can do something does not mean one should, re snooping on people for whatever reason.

If someone does not have their curtains drawn, will you stand by their window and keep on looking inside?

Or - if you have an address of the applicant, will you drive there ans sit in the car outside his/her house to snoop?

Depends what you are looking for? LOL

Never under estimate an employer to look for you online.

If someone looked for me they can see my FB page but only the tiny profile photo and the cover photo nothing else. On the net itself there are only posts on a ancestry type website nothing else at all as I never post on Public pages (FB included).

No but if they thought the area was a rough place like a coucil estate with a bad reputation the employer may just dismiss your CV.

Huh? How does place of living reflect on anyone's qualifications/abilities? Don't be ridiculous....

On a side note, I live on a council estate and that never stopped me getting a job, pretty well paid too and in companies that are known worldwide, including financial. So the above is utter nonsense.

I didn't say it did. You just never know what the employer is thinking. If they are looking you up they are not looking up the qualifications.

They can judge you on a number of things before they even meet you or not as the case may be.

Again - just because someone can do something does not mean they should. And again - I would nto work for someone who feels the need to snoop on me in any way.

And how did it help you to get a job?

If someone looks on my FB - they see me in dirty combat trousers smeared in mud with my 40kg German Shepherd and may also see my 4 cats - that never stopped me getting a job but it does not mean I am happy about people trying to snoop anyway. Very bad character trait - in my books.

If someone expects confidentiality from a prospective employee, they should not go out snooping themselves and respect other people right to private life, whatever that may be.

You wont know if someone has looked you up, would you?

How has what helped me get a job?

I didn't have a FB page in 2005 when I started my last job or a LinkedIn account as I believe that wasn't even around.

It is similar to jobs who ask you to included a photo. Why would they want one of those?

They are only looking up what's available you know. If you don't want people to see things don't post it. Hence my profile photo is friends only albeit everyone can see the avatar and on LinkedIn I have no photo.

You may not be happy but it happens.
