    Minimum 2 year statutory warranty.

Did you buy the phone with the original purchase receipt?

You've been a member here for 3 years and have never read Martins blog post about the 2 year EU warranty myth?

No, I have never read it.

But I had my wife's iPhone 5 replaced at an Apple store free of charge in January, 16 months after purchase (from O2, online) - no problem there.

Asda was the retailer and so may choose to replace it under store goodwill, Apple were not involved.

I cant go back to this person as the phone was working fine when received, had it for a day, updated to ios 7.1, wifi doesn't work. small claims would be a waste of time and money, it would feel morally wrong to do that. Plus its not that persons fault its Apples fault for

    A) not taking responsibility and recalling faulty phones that don't work with the updates, Infact break with their software updates

    B) for riling thousands of customers with this issue, i've done some research and these issues have been going on for a while with this device.

    C) this ones controversial - for engaging in a fairly widespread planned obsolescence tactic.

see links below. (i cant post links so removed the http)

I'll probably sell this on and lose some cash.

Well with every update you'll see a huge thread on something breaking (like wifi or decrease in battery life).

Do you think it might have been a coincidence the wifi chip broke the moment you updated to iOS 7?

If you strongly believe it's a software issue rather than hardware, then the best thing would be to wait for Apple to provide a patch to fix the wifi issue.
  • The WiFi slider on my iphone has decided not to work. I have spoken with Apple and they said my phone will need to be replaced at a cost of £166. My network provider, Vodafone, have offered an early upgrade which of course will up my monthly cost. As it obviously is a known software fault, I don't feel I should be the one forking out for a new phone.

Yes this is what I'm talking about, its happing to a lot of people, the more i read its looking like a hardware fault. The issue is widespread. Apple are not bothered.

According to the below link (this fix is mentioned in many other forums) its fixable with freezer!/lamp!/hairdryer! options or if this doesn't fix permanently its a case of reflowing the Murata SW SS1830010 Wi-Fi chip on the logic board, (this is not a simple process)

I think if you have reset/factory reset a number of times, including the reset connected to itunes, then it a case that the WIFI chip has overheated and burnt out when it was trying to do the IOS update, thats what mine has done. Its faulty WIFI chips not up to the job or the design of the device means where the chip is over heating. So effectively apple are happy to keep your phone functioning for a year and keep replacing it, I've read about people getting about 4 + exchanges for this issue in the first year of standard warranty, then after that years up its down to you to sort it. they want you to upgrade to the newer versions.

options are: get your network to unlock the phone and sell on ebay for around £100 mark (iphone 4s 16gb - no wifi), or get an unlimited 3G internet deal on your plan so you don't go over and can sort-of live without wifi (depending on your area and connectivity of course!)

its fairly dull really they need to rethink their pricing if they are going to make the devices as throw away as this.
