Have you tried a DFU restore? old instructions but is still the same process (Back up phone first)
When prompted set up as a new phone and see if it is still greyed out, if it is working you can then repeat the process but restore your back up, if it then greys out it could be a corrupt backup file causing it.

Hi all yes I agree with a lot of the points expressed here, except for the thing about the mobile career being responsibly for wifi issue, that's obviously a bit of confusion.

I suppose I am just very shocked because I am normally an apple "fan" although I'm not really into the whole culture of raising up inanimate objects/technologies as holy icons like some of these apple nutters.

I do also run an iphone 4 (not an S, the supposedly better one, the one I bought my girl) and this is running very well on 7.1 with no issues, maybe a bit glitchy from time to time but that's to be expected I suppose, it's a smaller older processor. So how can it be the case that there older model runs 7.1 fine and one with a better processor but that looks exactly the same have these wifi issues, they obviously have made some mistake along the line. So if you paid £400+ for an iPhone 4s (not a 4) just over a year a year ago you will now have to pay £160 to get your wifi working!

I did all the factory resets, about ten times, from the device only, thru to the iTunes connected resets. In all the forums there are a lot of people saying they have been putting there phones in the freezer! Blasting it with hairdryers etc. to reset the wifi chip??!! I want apple to make a really nice slick advert showing people how to go about doing this:)

I have no doubt that android phones and devices have bad support but are we talking top end price devices with as little as a year warranty?

It just makes me question upgrading to any other very expensive apple device if they cannot guartee it's going to last it's money's worth. I don't think £400-600 is worth a years use.

I will have to try this jailbreak for 7.1 when it's ready but I don't want to completely brick the phone.

    Thanks for your time people:)

Don't put too much hope into this idea, there is no jailbreak for 7.1 in the offing, and some of the hackers have commented that any exploits discovered now might be kept for an iOS 8 jailbreak (and iOS 8 will probably only accompany the release of the new iphone release in September).

... its out of its apple measly 1 year warranty

    Minimum 2 year statutory warranty.

Did you buy the phone with the original purchase receipt?

It's a myth. Apple just fob you off and send to the seller:

EU-wide Consumer Laws - Call or visit your seller
Apple One-Year Limited Warranty - 1 year from date of purchase

"EU-wide Consumer Laws" (SoGA in UK) aren't the same as a "Minimum 2 year statutory warranty" rolleyes.gif. In fact it's far more complicated than you are implying.

OP, it seems you want to force Apple to provide a remedy for your problem. Legally they aren't liable. The eBay seller is (if it's eBay business account) liable and you need to get in touch with them or take them to small claims court.

I cant go back to this person as the phone was working fine when received, had it for a day, updated to ios 7.1, wifi doesn't work. small claims would be a waste of time and money, it would feel morally wrong to do that. Plus its not that persons fault its Apples fault for

    A) not taking responsibility and recalling faulty phones that don't work with the updates, Infact break with their software updates

    B) for riling thousands of customers with this issue, i've done some research and these issues have been going on for a while with this device.

    C) this ones controversial - for engaging in a fairly widespread planned obsolescence tactic.

see links below. (i cant post links so removed the http)

I'll probably sell this on and lose some cash.
