I'm looking for a new phone for my dad he wants to be able to phone and text but also wants the option to go on the internet and take photographs in the future.

Decided on plan with Vodafone just unsure about handset

Has anyone got Moto G, Nokia Lumina 520 or Nokia Lumina 625 or any knowledge on these handsets?

Thanks in advance

Moto G is better value for money in terms of specifications, but Nokias are known to have better cameras.

Re 'easy to use', the operating systems are different and it's worth trying both before making choice.

As both phones are not expensive, buying outright and getting a sim-only plan can be a better option.

And if your dad has never had a smartphone and the contract is likely to be uncapped, make sure that he doesn't exceed the allowance accidentally. Or consider using Giffgaff instead of Vodafone.

Thanks I don't think I'm going to be near a store for ages unfortunately
I have mentioned pay as you go/sim only but he wants a contract (I know not very money saving!) and don't worry the internet will be off until he's mastered the phone!

Moto G is clear value for money & easy to use . Buy it outright from £100 - £140 and take out a SIM only contract (pay monthly NOT PAYGO). ie Tesco SIM only is about £10 a month

Do you want an Android phone or a Windows phone? That's the factor to decide before you choose the actual handset.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • I think nokia is better choice, windows phone is simplier than android. Or maybe doro liberto,it is android, but is simplier than standard android.
  • The Lumia 520 is a decent phone when bought for £70 from the Carphone warehouse as a PAYG.

If your dad really must have a contract buy it on PAYG (nominally on Vodafone but the phone will be unlocked) and then "upgrade" to the cheapest possible SIM only plan after you have had the "trial" month on Vodafone PAYG.

For light use giffgaff is worth a look but buy the phone first.

I'd recommend the Moto G absolutely superb phone, plus think long term about how his usage will change as he grows accustomed to the phone. Plenty of my customers say they will never use for this or for that and 4-5 months down the line do.

And when it comes to the internet, majority of networks cap it so I wouldn't fret about excess charges.
    You must be joking.

Perhaps you could post that advice on the recent thread about a £1300 charge for using too much data.

To my knowledge (and by being told by staff members who work their) 3 cap, O2 cap (and through O2; GiffGaff and Tesco) so there's 4.
