They claimed that the law insists on a phonecall. That is what I want clarifying.
The Data Protection Act insists that they do not reveal an individual's data to the wrong person.

Bing Ads have probably decided that the only way they can make appropriate checks is via a phone call.

Of course they will make the most of that call to try and retain a customer... what company wouldn't?

They, by law, however dont have to delete all records/transactional information they hold however. Whilst the DPA states that records shouldnt be held longer than necessary, there is no clear definition of what that period is.

So some companies retain transactional records for 6/7 years to comply with AML laws.

If anyone wishes to answer my question then I will be very grateful.

OK - it's illegal for them to ask

    Happy now ?

If you have a link then yes, I will be ecstatic.

All I want in this thread is a simple answer. I am no expert on consumer law which is why I thought asking this in the consumer rights section would be a good idea. I did not realise just how over run with trolls this site was.

All I ask is that someone with more knowledge than I, confirms or disproves what bing ads have said.

As I said in my OP, I suspect it is bull that bing ads are coming out with to retain customers but I just want clarification.

Ok, the law does not state that they require a phonecall.

However the law does not also state that they cant impose this restriction under their own conditions of closure.

Im guessing im on ignore, but Section 7 of the Data Protection Act.
    Where a data controller—

(a)reasonably requires further information in order to satisfy himself as to the identity of the person making a request under this section and to locate the information which that person seeks, and

(b)has informed him of that requirement,

the data controller is not obliged to comply with the request unless he is supplied with that further information.

It's your attitude and your responses that have yielded the replies you have had. AFAIK not one of the previous posters has ever trolled this forum; they have often, and over a period of time, given sound advice to many other posters. Most of whom have asked nicely. And heeded advice given.

What is the need for this kind of abuse?

I simply asked a question on behalf of my mum. What an awful forum.

No - probably not so I wholeheartedly apologise

The post is however honest - what exactly are you trying to achieve here that a simple phone call to them won't solve ? They may have played fast & loose with the 'law' word but thta's not going to get you out of playing by their rules
