I've just walked past THE THING again and it's started!

    That was the 5th try.

    Thanks for your help.

Nephew's had exactly the same symptoms. I wiped the hard drive and installed Ubuntu; this also worked for a few days but then the black screen came back. Has to be a hardware issue. The IT guys at work were also stumped so I gave up.

    Thanks dave

I left THE THING for a short time while I prepared my veg, no-one is going to get anything to eat today at this rate, it's gone to sleep and THE THING will not wake up again.

It's a shame because if the restore had worked I could have given it to my sister and brother-in-law as their laptop has packed up. Don't know what is wrong with it.

We've ordered one but I would have liked to have got this one working if poss.

I remember it well, couldn't even access the BIOS on boot up; so frustrating! It has to be hardware related.

Yup, I may look for a hammer.

I'm not techie at all, as you have probably realised, but I agree it must be hardware related - hard disk no good?

S'pose it could be sold for parts on ebay? I've never sold/bought on ebay though.

At least I don't feel so thick as your IT guys were stumped.

It's annoying because once it's on it's fine.

I swapped the hard drive and also the ram, the problem persisted. Guess it's something to do with the motherboard.
