New Laptop needed - does this one seem OK?

http://www.coopelectricalshop.co.uk/Toshiba-Satellite-C50D-133-Laptop-AMD-E1-2100-4GB-500GB-Windows-8-1-15-6/id-TOS-LAP-C50D_133-BK?gclid=COP91vPwvr0CFWT4wgodA3EAZw&gclsrc=aw.ds#sthash.kLht95Wp.dpuf

Hope that link works - never posted one before.

We are only basic users - internet, home correspondence, I've got a few spreadsheets. No gaming, music, movies etc.

Any opinions or alternative suggestions please?

Our 5 year old Toshiba Satellite L300D 13S is on it's last legs.

Another question, would we be able to install Microsoft Office 2007 from the Toshiba Recovery Disks created when the L300D laptop was first bought. Sorry if that's a daft question - I can use a computer but I know very little about how they work.

Thank you.

Dolly

on it's last legs or slow? factory restore or windows reinstall cures slow.

office depends if it came with office and what type of recovery discs you made, most come with a trial

Thank you very much for the reply.

It started playing up 2 weeks ago. I had been using it, went away to do something else, came back and it wouldn't wake up (I don't know if its sleeping or hibernating). Had to power off and power on. I deleted all unnecessary stuff and then ran Anti Malware Bytes and then CCleaner. AMWB found 2 trojans but they were in Comodo - got rid of them.

I've extended the hibernate and sleep times.

It's getting worse and worse though, sometimes have to power on and off 4 or 5 times to get it to boot up. The Windows "music" warbles sometimes. When it's working, it's fine.

I've got to back up my files - a USB stick is on it's way (don't shout at me).

We bought the laptop for our son in January 2009 - he did the Recovery Disks (2 in all) before using it. He used it for a couple of years then bought a Mac so we inherited it. He did a complete restore before passing it on. We carried on using our PC until it broke and we've been using the laptop for about 2 years. Office wouldn't have been a trial because it's still there, never had to buy anything.

Sorry for being such a dinosaur.

    Thanks - Dolly

usb hard disk is better for backup, portable hard disks are around £40

hibernate is better than power saving, the latter can cause resume problems sometimes

difficult to answer the office question, if you bought a usb hard disk, you could do a complete disk image backup to it, and create the macrium boot cd, then try the resintall - if office isn't there, you can always revert to the macrium backup which will put it back to how it is now

does it have a q: drive? (microsoft office click to run), did your son buy and install office?

Don't think it has a q: drive. When I go into Computer it shows c, d and e drives.

At the moment there is 35.2GB free of 74.3GB on the c: drive Vista and 60.5GB free of 73.2GB on the d: Data drive.

Everything came loaded onto the laptop and son had to create the recovery disks.

I've bought a SanDisk 16GB Cruzer Blade because I was only going to back up my documents.

    Thanks - Dolly

run chkdsk c: /F to check the hard disk out and try setting the powersaving to use hibernate rather than sleep

Do I do that by clicking on the start button and typing run chkdsk c: /F in the search box at the bottom or through My Computer and right clicking on the c: drive, Properties, Tools?

My lack of knowledge is embarrassing.

That machine has a useful BIOS Update

    If you wish to install it;

Download, save and then un-zip the package. Run the application within by right clicking on it and choosing 'Run as Administrator'.

Look at BIOS update process 4: from step 4 from then on.

Office 2007 would have been a Trial unless he purchased a key or installed his own version.
Microsoft® Works, Microsoft® Office Home and Student 2007 (free 60-day trial)

My L300 is showing no signs of giving up. Not a scratch on it either.

I haven't done the BIOS thing yet. I've downloaded it though. Does Unzip mean Extract All Files? Don't know if I want Windows 7, haven't used it. Decisions, decisions.

I'm pretty sure Office wasn't a trial, it was already on the laptop. He wouldn't have paid for anything - we would have had to:D (at the time). Son's at work at the moment so can't confirm.
