New Laptop needed - does this one seem OK?

checking the installed date of office may give you a clue - go into control panel, programs and features, and find office!!

I've had that many interruptions while typing this reply I was timed out when I clicked on Submit so I've got to do it all again.
I've done the chkdsk through Computer, right click c: drive, Properties, Tools, Error Checking. It wouldn't do it there and then, I had to click on "check on next restart". So I closed "Computer" and clicked on restart. It did the check and restarted automatically. There weren't any error messages.
I've looked at the programs/features and there is "Activation Assistant for 2007 Microsoft Office Suite" installed 21/10/2010 which ties up with when son would have done complete restore (from the disks he created in January 2009) as he had his Mac on 16/10/2010 - I found the receipt! There's other Microsoft Visual C++ 2005, 2008 and 2010 Redistributable etc all with different dates. I don't know what MS Visual is.
I've opened Word and Excel, clicked on Help and About Word/Excel and the boxes displayed are:
Microsoft Word 2002 SP3
This product is licensed to
HOME
TOSHIBA
Product ID xxxx.xxx.xxxxxxxx.xxxxx
and same/similar for Excel.
So it looks to me (gulp) as if Office was included in the bundle.
Thank you for all your help. I'll see how it goes and I will look into the sleep/hibernate thing now. I don't know which one it does when you just leave it and it goes off on its own.

I'll probably be back!0 -

There is your clue.
Laptop came with a Office 2007 Home & Student Trial.
What is installed is Office XP(2002). I am reluctant to suggest that it is a 'hooky' install.Initial release March 5, 2001; 13 years ago
Final release Service Pack 3 (SP3) / March 30, 2004; 10 years ago
So it's final release was five years before your laptop was built.0 -
Ahhh.
This is my fault - I'm so sorry. I knew the laptop had got all the usual office programs on it and we bought it in 2009 so I (wrongly) assumed it was Office 2007 plus I had seen that entry in the "Programs and Features". Word and Excel didn't seem any different to what I had been using both at work and home on the old PC. There was a clue there, wasn't there? I just used them without thinking about what version they were.
I knew we hadn't paid for anything though.
I have actually got an Office XP disk.
Edit : The Word & Excel Product ID numbers are stated in full, I just put x's because it was easier.
Shouldn't be hooky should it?

Sorry, I told you I would be back!
I went into the power settings a few days ago and working on the principle that if the idle little beggar didn't go to sleep/hibernate when not in use (idle), I wouldn't have to wake it up, so I set it to "never". It has been OK once it has finally powered up/booted up, whatever is the correct term. Worst day today. Tried 20-30 times - nothing.
We are going to get a new one. What do you think of the one in my first post?
My USB was delivered on Tues or Wed and I've backed up my documents.
Would the one in the link let me put my Office XP on it?
I do my banking etc on line and I don't want to be without a computer for long.
I will try to rescue this one when I've got another but I didn't realise until now how much we depend on a computer.
Please advise on the computer in the link if you can.
Thank you for your help and advice.

Office XP no longer receives security updates. If it was me I'd download and install the latest version of Libre Office, it's completely free of charge and compatible with your existing Word & Excel files.0

Well I've done a complete restore from the recovery disks this morning and it still won't work. The power light comes on, it makes the initial noise, the fan works, then nothing. Tried about 12 times so far. At least everything has been deleted from it.
Could it be a hardware fault?
I've ordered the one in my first post which should be here on Wednesday and I will install Libre Office as suggested by dave_dph.0 -
My nephew had the Toshiba L350D (if I remember correctly), exactly the same thing happened to that!
Hope my L855 doesn't go that way - at least not for a few years yet0 -
strange that it managed to go through a complete windows reinstall before failing
try it without the battery in
try pressing firmly on the keyboard!!

Hi closed
I'm using my son's Mac at the moment and I've lost my reply twice already - it just shot across to the right of the screen and disappeared. Don't know what I did.
About an hour ago (longer now) I was walking past the bl00dy thing so I pressed the power button again and it came on!
The last restore I did was on the old Packard Bell bought for Xmas 1998 (£1500!) so I did not know the process for this one. It went through a lengthy second stage - Windows setting up, at least 4 stages of Toshiba installation stuff etc, etc. It had to restart a couple of times and it was fine. When it eventually finished I shut it down. It won't start again.
I took the battery out yesterday. I've done the restore with the AC adaptor plugged in to the mains.
I'm a bit fed up now.
