If prices are comparable then BA, for their far superior cabin baggage allowance (economy)

The only material difference between the two is one allows 10kg, the other 25kg and one states you can have a handbag/manbag on top of this.

In practice has anyone ever seen Virgin weigh hand luggage? Or stop someone taking a handbag as well as hand luggage?

Maybe others fly with gold bullion more often than me but even our fortnight long hold suitcases are normally in the mid teens of KGs so how you'd need the long weekend handluggage type bag to be 25kg I've no idea

Actually, yes, we have had our hand luggage weighed on several occasions flying with Virgin and have had to fit my handbag inside as well.

BA's allowance allows me to take a bag with my camera gear and tablet as well as overnight things (which can weigh over 10kg in total, depending on which camera equipment I'm taking) as well as my handbag while my husband can take the laptop bag in addition to his 'normal' hand luggage.

Our hold luggage actually rarely weighs more than than our hand luggage but we carry items in our handluggage that we would not want carried in the hold and that we wish to ensure end up in the same place as us and at the same time.

The question is irrelevant. Too many things that need to be asked to make a decision. Where are you going? What time of year? Flight times to your destination makes a big difference. What cabin will you be booking?
Are you taking children or infants?
And the biggest one for me is where you live. I am in Nottingham and to get to LGW where most VS flights go from is a good 1 1/2 hours further on, and more than that if you hit rush hour. I haven't flown with them since BA started their service to LAS from LHR.
Anyway, what about AA, they are as good as the 2 you mentioned and better in some respects.
The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.

You've evidently been less fortunate than us, I cant even recall seeing them have scales at the gate to be able to check the weight but have always flown from LHR so perhaps LGW is different.

This has been a lively debate!

Mention the words BA/Virgin/Easyjet/Ryanair in any given question and cue pandemonium.

    Okay,

It's Gatwick to Saint Lucia and it would be economy class

    Hope that helps.

    Virgin.
The days of them being spectacularly better than BA are long gone but overall their flight attendants have less of an attitude and the fleet is better.
On our BA flight down to Antigua a few weeks ago an entire row had no working seat-back entertainment system and on the return journey my screen was distorting so much it was unwatchable.
It's all subjective, of course, but I find BAs standards slip each year I travel on them and that's quite a few times.
Asian and Middle-East airlines are far superior in every single way.

    I'd agree with that.
I've found that I really do not enjoy flying BA from LGW and I tend to make my own way from LHR when travelling in groups (massively unsocial I know but I'm 10mins from LHR).

If it came to a choice of BA v VS @ LHR then I'm BA all day. T5 is what travelling should be - only once has my luggage not beaten me to the luggage belt.
Quick passport lanes, no queues at check in - its just a breeze.

I imagine T2 will be like it when it eventually opens which will open up a lot of options for me I reckon.

I work for Virgin Holidays and I know I may be biased but Virgin are better than BA

I'd go for BA. St Lucia goes on a 4-class aircraft, so the economy cabin is pretty small (only 14 rows). Usually there are good opportunities to pay for upgrades to WT+ as well. Also, I've just checked some prices and BA are cheaper :)
