its worth getting someone to take a look at your chimney if you are serious about using it...we have done simila in two seperate houses and TBH a grate is reasonably easy to source.
In our current house we have 2 real fireplaces that work ...one in the dining room and one in the bedroom...we found the dining room one covered up...and put in the bedroom one seperately
They really are lovely in the winter....

you cant beat a real fire, sitting next to one now, only heating we have in our bungalow, luckily we get free logs:D0 -
Also works well with melted chocolate but let it cool a bit first or add in a bit of cream as hot chocolate will pop balloon.
