Can you help us? We're planning a main site poll - have we missed any options?

Hi everyone,

We're looking to do a poll on Inheritance Tax and would be grateful for your thoughts.

Important: we're not looking for your answer yet, just whether you think we've missed any options.

Please let us know if you think there are any options we've missed on the following poll:

Should Inheritance tax be scrapped?

The Prime Minister has said he’d like to raise the threshold at which you pay Inheritance Tax to £1m (currently its £325,000 or £650,000 for a couple as allowances can be transferred).

Where do you stand on the principle of inheritance tax?

Keep it. It's an important way to stop perpetuating privilege by birth and to redistribute income.

Keep it, but exclude someone’s main home from it. You should always be able to pass that on.

Keep it, but make sure it's only for the very rich.

Scrap it. People have already been taxed when they earn cash, why should it be taxed when they die?

Scrap it. People have a right to pass their money on as they choose.

Thanks in advance!

  • Hi everyone, we've just moved this over from another Forum board.

Can you think of any other options we can include in the poll?

This is for the main site and weekly email so any help you can give would be fantastic.
Could you do with a Money Makeover?

Perhaps keep it, but introduce a sliding scale.

Options 4 and 5 are really the same thing, just different reasons for choosing them. 'Scrap it' is 'Scrap it', full stop. This has happened with other MSE polls, people don't know which to vote for, as both reflect their view. There should just be one option.

Keep it but only for estate over 1 million inc house.

I worked hard for what I have. I did not get anything from inheritance or parents.

I want to pass on what I have to my children. I can change what I pass on by my will.

But hopefully NOT in line with Stamp Duty, which seems to kick in quite low and escalate quite steeply!

could make option 1 clearer by saying 'keep it as it is now'

For completeness you could include an option to keep it and reduce the level at which it starts - I doubt if many people would vote for it but some might.

Its around 15/16k pay IHT around 3% of those that die.
