Yes they do, if you pay them over the counter. Anyway, the poster who was complaining about having to pay £5 obviously has online access if they are posting on here. So why not pay bills online for free?

The two branches in Croydron have been doing this for ages.
More worryingly the now tiny branch in Purley is going to be closing at 3.30 instead of 4.30 every afternoon.0 -

I was not complaining but stating a fact. I do use internet banking
Why it gets my goat about paying £5 for each bill payment is for people that don't have computers and use internet banking are normally the lowered paid in society so don't have a computer with internet access or people who have no interest in computers.
Is if fair to punish members of society who pay tax like everyone else have to pay more to get the same service as someone who does have access.
And as we get gas/electric bills every quarter, council tax monthly they are paying lot of money extra that they can't afford to pay out as they prefer to pay when the bill comes in rather than DD. And may find it hard to open another account.
The only way to get around this is to change banks if they can. Or pay in at the bank named on the payment slip. And then they have to branch of that local. If not they are stuck.

I know my customers get annoyed on occassion when the tills are blocked by non-customers - these non customers don't want to pay the fee & when we advise to go to their own bank to pay their bills for free, the usual answer is that they are with a building society who won't take their bills & it's the building society who send them to the bank, the same with bags of coin - but why should banks do the work of the building societies - it's their customers, let them do the work & let the banks concentrate on their own customers - if these customers want a full banking service, open an account with a bank not a BS. As previous posts have pointed out, the majority of bank's profits are made from overseas & corporate means - only a small percentage is from the private sector & we have a vast number of customers who use the counter service, regular payments & various other services without paying any fees at all, because they conduct their account in the right way & within the T&C0

paying at the bank named on the slip is not actually correct - the onus is on the customer paying the bill & a non-customer can only pay free if the company they are paying have made arrangements with their bankers to accept all of their credits free of charge - 2 of the biggest companies that we deal with that have not made free arrangements even though their account is with us are Orange mobile phones & Littlewoods catalogues - most of the companies specify on the reverse if it is free of charge at the bank named on the front of the bill - more & more of these companies are advising to take them to the customers own bank as they haven't made the fee free arrangement - & if you bank with a building society you are back to square one!0

As a side-note the Halifax doesn't allow giro bill payment in the branches (in Huddersfield at least). I noticed it said HSBC on the slip so went to HSBC to pay - they asked if I had an account with them (I said yes) - paid straight away.
If your a Halifax customer wanting to pay a giro bill payment and you don't have a PC at home/work, you can use the computer inside the Halifax branches to pay using your Halifax account (even the savings and basic accounts).
Failing that you can use internet cafes', friends and or relatives PC.Proudly Banking & Saving With:

I sometimes go to another bank to pay bills because I once pulled the bird who works there and was hoping to maybe see her again. She's not accepted yet but she's not charged me either! Mind you she probably knows I'm skint!0

I totally agree with virgin_moneysaver (I think we may work for the same bank!). People need to think about what they'll need to do with their account before opening it, if they're going to need to pay lots of bills and have lots of coin changed, it's much better to open an account with a bank rather than a building society. Plus, all my customers say we're so much friendlier than the building societies!0

As a cashier of the same bank as virginmoneysaver and sarahmelita, it amazes me when we have to take payments for people who have building society bank accounts. If I banked with an organisation that wasn't able to process my bills for me I would bank elsewhere. I feel sorry for the genuine customers of the bank when they have to queue longer because the counter is clogged up with building society customers because the society doesn't offer a full counter service.0
