    No it is not. Third place of the big six for the Standard tariffs. Even including all suppliers there are only three that are more than a pound cheaper per month.

    Actually...

    It depends upon one's consumption. Certainly, for my family's consumption the difference in figures for the standard variable tariffs, on dual fuel, is considerable:

    1. £2,129 – Variable – Extra Energy

    2. £2,313 – Variable – Green Star

    3. £2,430 – Variable – Utility Warehouse

    4. £2,470 – Variable – Co-Operative Energy

    5. £2,499 – Variable – EDF

    6= £2,505 – Variable – British Gas

    6= £2,505 – Variable – Sainsbury’s Energy

    8. £2,520 – Variable – Scottish Power

    9. £2,536 – Variable – SSE

    -- £2,579 – Variable – E-ON

    -- £2,830 – Variable – nPower

    Apparently we should all be really grateful to Ed Miliband for this, not sure why though.

    The problem is that you didn't take it into account in what you wrote.

    So why did you not bother to compile and list the figures for the other fifteen regions? And the other three payment methods? And why did you only list dual fuel (on those consumptions single fuel tariffs are likely to be even cheaper). And... And...

    Because you didn’t.

    Instead, you made a bald and sweeping statement that in practice is not correct for many people and could mislead them.

    My own posting was specific in limiting itself to how the figures work out for my family’s consumption and it didn’t take anything as “read” except the meters.

    Even if you disregard the fact that SSE came out fourth (by £16) and not third, in my list, there are eight – not three – that are cheaper by more than £1 a month and the cheapest is £407 per annum cheaper.

    Under such circumstances, for you to write unequivocally of SSE:

    is patently incorrect and, for many, by a considerable margin.

    It was not my wish to enter into a dispute with you (although it was clearly yours to dispute what polymaff posted) – I wished merely to warn others that what you had written was provably wrong.

    I proved it to be wrong.

    I suggest that we now let this matter rest and expend no further time on it.
