    Thanks String.

On the Green issue, Are we suddenly going to stop drilling for oil if we vote to stay in the UK? The answer is obviously no.

Let's continue to use the oil (and spend it on things which matter not Trident) eventually once the oil has run out we'll have 25% of Europes wind and tidal energy to keep us ticking over.

So how many of you still want independence now oil's lost 30% of its value in the last couple of months?

    About 54% of us?

It's never been about the oil for the (vast majority of) Yes campaign. It's been about social justice and proper representation.

We are where we are and we'll make the best of it. Independence isn't far away.

All right, so that's one of you anyway. Over here, we understood it was all about the oil. You've got your devolution - even scots Tories support it now - so surely social justice and proper representation is up to you?
The collapse in oil prices would be causing panic now if you'd voted Yes. Even the mighty mr Putin is worried. A 9% swing towards independence despite this? Na.

You've been reading the Daily Mail again, haven't you?

No. It was the FT - Russia is moving into a slump due to the collapse in oil prices. US fracking suddenly looks like an unprofitable business. OPEC is rattled.

Hands up anyone who saw that coming.

I hate the Mail as well. Lies, nonsense and celebs. And lies and nonsense about celebs.

Well I do. It wasn't about oil. Scotland, like many other countries that manage to govern themselves, can do it without oil. Oil would have been the cherry on the cake.

Interestingly, another 500 million barrels have been discovered despite the "experts" telling us that if we voted to govern ourselves it would dry up the very next day.

Oil price, like many other things fluctuates. It's currently 50% higher than it was 5 years ago. Of course saying there has been a 50% rise in 5 years is a statistic that doesn't suit your agenda,

Furthermore, why would someone from Ulster come onto the Scottish forum with those remarks unless they were deliberately trolling?

You should be more concerned about the shortfall to the UK economy of a 30% drop in oil revenues. For the UK that equates to £20,000,000,000. Better start getting ready for more cuts and higher taxes in Ulster.

Partly correct. 'Course you could govern yourselves - that was never in doubt.
I have no agenda. I just happened to be reading about tumbling oil prices, which it seems are likely to lead to collapse in Venezuela amongst other upsets. All very interesting. Just wondered what the Scottish angle on it was.

Now that the UK is a net importer of oil, it would seem that it would be a net beneficiary of dropping oil prices, although difficult to say, what with British interests in the oil trade across the world.

As for tax/cuts gloom after the next election, I've been getting ready for that for a while. I just hadn't made any allowance for lower oil prices.

Where do you get your £20,000,000,000 figure? And unless that was another of the Grauniad's legendary misprints, the latest discovery was 50 million barrels. Ptchah.

Quite obvious to me that the "consolidation" of the no vote would begin gradually after the referendum. Blowing oil out of the water would seem a logical move with a sustained period of low prices likely to considerably undermine the SNP position.

Yeah, well you spouted similar sensationalism in your previous post.

How many panics have there been over falling or increasing oils prices in the last decade?

Sensationalism? Oh too sexy for the ft. Could you be more Mail-like than reporting a 50 million barrel find as 500 million? That's a fairly big spout.

Who knows? I've never got too anxious about it. I might if I was Nigerian or Venezuelan and my future depended on it. Or maybe even scots. The difference is this is a drop in prices, which is unlikely to cause any distress outside the exporting countries. Previous scares have all been price rise related. A less than subtle difference.
