Thanks Teacup for starting this thread off. I too have just started having students we currently have 2 boys staying with us the money is good at the moment £14 pppn and these are only staying for 11 nights so not too long if we dont like it.

I have tried to save money on the meals where possible we have to provide breakfast lunch and eveing meal. Can anyone give any advice for the meal plans or even ground rules that i should introduce for next time?

A relative mentioned this to me the other day and as we have loads of space I thought it could be a good money earner. I'll google it to see what the criteria is. I'm a bit concerned about the breakfast bit as hubby and I both work full time. I'd rather have someone who did their own meals LOL!

Did anyone experience any behavioural problems with these students or find it hugely inconvenient having them around? Can you pick and choose the age range, sex, interests of the students you have?

It takes a bit of getting used to. When i applied i was given an application form i could tick age group, gender and depending on the school nationality

  • My Grandparents have a french student staying with them at the moment, she's over hear learning English before going to uni in Paris this Autumn. Its definately a good way to earn a bit of cash and brush up on your language skills and if you're cooking etc for your children anyway I guess its not so bad - but my grandparents are struggling a little as they're not used to having teenagers in the house!!!

I emailed my local english school as they were advertising in the local paper and the said that i sounded like a suitable aplpicant and will be in touch. They pay £100 a week and i offered to take 2 students at once if they didnt mind sharing. I only have 2 bedrooms so will mean my little girl sleeping in my room for the 2 weeks they wouldbe stayingat a time, but the money and company (im a single mum) would be good.

A friend of mine has done it before but didnt enjoy it as she didnt speak uch french and the student was quite shy, but im quite lucly as i speak a little and have a friend who is fluent in it.

Does anyone know where i'd find out about this, as I am in the North west, and all the openings seem to be in the South?:p :p

hi just looking at the threads. As far as rules go. I let the student help themselves to breakfast and toast in the mornings. That way I can get on getting things done. I say that evening meal is six o clock and I tell them if they dont want meal they must phone me by 5 o clock at the latest to let me know. Also I just expect them to rinse shower out after each use , and not to wear shoes in the house. If I have loud door slammer ones !!! I just ask them to close doors quietly!. First student was here for 5 weeks and has invited us to his parents holiday home in spain!! he said just pay for flights! Good money saving tip , be extra nice and get free holiday !!!!!!!.
I have another student at moment who is lovely too. If you have students I try to enjoy it rather than see it as a chore, the children seem to be better behaved while having some one staying in house !! and they are sharing room too.
Also I give them door key and do ask if they are late they be as quiet as possible when coming in to the house so as to not wake everyone up . I also just have boys as I love them !! no seriously I just have boys as they dont hog the bathroom like girls ! that is my job !. Also they go out more. are generally easier , no offence to us girls ! I know what I am like
Asd far as meals go one night i do fish cakes / noodles and vegetables, baked potato and salad , pasta, etc. It doesnt make my food bill any bigger having an extra mouth to feed.
I change bed once a week and give them towel a couple of times:T

  • I do very similar to teacup. We have 6 girls at a time sharing 3 twin rooms at the top floor of our house. We get £90 PW each student and have to provide breakfast, packed lunch and evening meal. We are fortunate that our house is large and they have own bathroom to share, but it is still a lot of work (I have 3 kids). This is our third year hosting (season runs June to September here) and we are fast running out of enthusiasm for it! After totting up food, extra on water meter, bills etc I reckon we make about £60 pw profit from each student.

I currenlty have a french student here for 11 days to see how it goes. He is 14 and so is not allowed out but wil be out a few evenigns with the schools social events til 9.30. I have found it a bit awkard at first as he doesnt speak much english so would like someone older next time, but touch wood is going ok.

I dont find it costs much more and it encourages us all to sit down at a table in the evenings to eat a proper meal.
