I would be interested to see the roundabout sign on the run up to Entrance A (with the layout of the roundabout as depicted on the sign rather than on a satellite) before I made a decision.

I would have said Car 2 was in the wrong, however if Exit D was depicted on the roundabout SIGN on Entrance A as being more than halfway round the roundabout then Car 1 should have been in the right hand lane for that exit.

That would have avoided the near miss but does not negate the fact that Car 2 should have been in the left hand lane to take the first exit off the roundabout (if, as you said, there were no road markings to say you could do this in the right hand lane).

I've been in many similar situations and, if there are no road markings to say Car 2 can do this in the right hand lane, they are usually a**eholes just trying to get past you and every other driver near them.

If the OP names the roundabout it can be streetviewed.....Roadmarkings and signs can then be seen..

As car 2 approached the roundabout they should have been on the inside lane (where car 1 had been) as that is the correct lane for turning left or going straight ahead at (most) roundabouts. Lane two on that junction is for cars turning right and leaving the roundabout at the next exit after D.

    I agree also.

Car 2 is most definitely in the wrong lane, Car 1 really depends on the road markings and the position of the exit.

Everyday on the way to work I use a roundabout with four exits, those using the first and second exit are to use lane 1 only, and those using three and four are to use lane two only, really that should be quite simple. At least once a week I am using lane one to access the second exit and some idiot tries to drive through me to get to exit one. It isn't exactly a confusing roundabout, plus on approach the signs are very clear, the road markings before hand are very clear and the lanes are actually marked on the roundabout.

Exit D is the straight on exit at this roundabout so lane one is the correct lane to use as per the HC:

I see some posting about the exit not being staight from OP's photo, I always thought second exit doesn't necessarily need to be "straight" but be a second exit

What I find more annoying about driver's going "straight" is when they literally drive straight over cutting you up as you turn right.

I can't believe there's any debate about this. In a four exit roundabout, well three if you ignore the exit on which the two cars are approaching, then the inner lane can be used for exits 1 and 2, and the outside lane for exits 2 and 3.

You absolutely can't be exiting on exit 1 from the outside lane.

With regards to how a driver decides which lane, and what signals should be given on approach to a roundabout, firstly, the road sign itself is of utmost importance.

The position of one's intended exit, dictates whether it requires no signal on approach, or a right signal [ignoring the first, left turn for the moment.]

Anything to the right of the 12 o'clock[ish] position is a right turn, unless road markings/signs say otherwise.

The physical, geographical position of the various exits from each other is irrelevant.

However, in many instances local knowledge [of a primary route] leads to local behaviour, which in itself is totally uncaring of whether one is a stranger or not.

CAr 2 is being driven by a Coq! Simples.

Near where I live & work, major roundabouts have special signage informing drivers of the correct way to take the exits they want....since, with an incredibly high percentage of large vehicles undergoing driving tests round here, and doing it right...the LA felt it was time the rest of the driving world got it right as well.
No, I don't think all other drivers are idiots......but some are determined to change my mind.......

Both parties to blame. However car 2 is more in the wrong.

Comment: Too many roundabouts do not make it clear enough what lane you need to be in, and/or don't tell you soon enough, this both makes it more dangerous but also significantly reduces capacity which is stupid considering the cost of paint.
