How to get accurate valuation for your car?
Comments
-
Hi all,
I am looking to sell my car or part exchange it for another one.
How can I get a accurate valuation for my car and get the most out of it? It feels like the car salesmen want to rip you off based on their valuations.
Thanks
They often use the Glass guide, which is like the trade price and may differ somewhat from the parkers guide price.
Unless your car is pristine and very low mileage, then expect fair to good price based on what car or parkers, however you have to be realistic on what you may get on a private sale (and depends on the car a small car, diesel or estate is not what everyone is after).0 -
Autotrader? Will give you an idea of the prices other cars of that model are being offered for - not necessarily the selling price.
You can try We Buy Any Car to get an offer of what they would payRemember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.0 -

I'd also say get a quote from we buy any car. They won't pressure you into selling, and will just send you a few emails, but it will give you a bottom end trade price for your car, then add a bit more to it for the real price.0

Also try www.parkers.co.uk0

If you check on Parkers and look at the part-ex value you wont be too far out.
You tend to get more from a dealer by part exchanging it than just selling it.
There is always a bottom line in a deal when buying and part exchanging and the dealer makes you think you've got a good deal but at the end of the day they are out to make money.
The best price you will get is selling privately but if it is an expensive car you run into problems of how they pay for it.0 -
A few web sites let you have a glass' guide valuation. Vauxhall.co.uk was one - I don't know if it still does. Or whatcar.com0

If you've been a member of the AA for over a year you can get a free Glass' Guide valuation.0

Car salesmen have to add on their costs - probably £1500 per car, plus a markup on to the car so expect there to be somewhere around £2,500 of a difference between trade price and retail price, so their offers reflect this, rather than being a "rip off"
Also, depending on the car they will either want to dispose of it - auction or to another trader - or if its particularly nice they'll keep it for stock.
There is no "accurate" valuation for a car, because each dealer will view it differently. Even the trade bible - Glass's Guide - is purely a "guide".0
