If you jump straight in, crack their head open and leave them dead I'd guarantee you wouldn't get burgled again. It's why I'm considering a projectile, gives me an advantage without even getting close. If someone has entered my house they've obviously weighed up the risk, therefore if they die its their fault. Unfortunate but it's a risk of the 'job'. I don't have a problem with the home owners who shoot their burglars although if you do it once they've left the house you've taken it too far.
Unfortunately for you, the law doesn't see it this way.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tony_Martin_(farmer)#Burglary_and_shooting
He got life but at least 8 years but reduced to 5 years on appeal (out in 3 years) while the burglar who survived got 3 years (served 18 months).0 -
From what I remember of the case Tony Martin was arrested primarily because he shot them as they were fleeing from the property, if I've got the right case here.
You can use reasonable force, even if it ends up killing them. Of course it would be up to the judge to define if the force used was reasonable or not.
I am kinda jesting as I wouldn't wish to go to prison but I wouldn't have an issue killing an intruder if they changed the law and I knew I could get away with it. Doubt it'll ever happen though.0 -
They were still within the property when he shot them.
Reasonable force is open to interpretation and you would still end up charged and facing a trial and all the stress and strain that takes.0 -
I do think the law is wrong on this one. If someone enters your property they should be fair game.
After all, every so often you'll get a burglar that won't just be there for your stuff and instead will at the least kill everyone in the home. I'd rather not think I could have avoided that (for the short life I had left) because I was scared of the law.0 -
If anyone is puzzled why people don't help, read my posts about Darley & Latanes research in these threads.

The guy who does martial arts.... just a word of warning.
Our MA teacher was assaulted by three youths looking to rob him. He defended himself very well.
They sued him.
I am not kidding. Regrettably i moved away from the area so did not hear the outcome of the case.
A girl i was in training with was pulled up in court after a bloke broke into her house and attempted to rape her. The court deemed breaking the bedside lamp over his head was not reasonable force.
Its a mad world, adding a weapon in the equation makes for a dangerous outcome. Please note I have a cognitive disability - as such my wording can be a bit off, muddled, misspelt or in some cases i can miss out some words totally...0 -
I think you live in a horrible street -and I'd hate to have neighbours who did nothing if I was attacked. I actually think "nice streets" are worse for this "won't get involved" attitude. My Mum's road was like that-all the curtains would twitch but no-one wanted to get involved or even call the police. Nice middle class streets are apparently well known for this type of attitude.
"to cut a long story short"....
There was a lot of commotion in the street with neighbours all out wandering what is going on, while I was outside the front of my house on the phone to the police (house phone range isn't that great, other people helping so was more important for me to stay in contact with the police).
To make things more strenuous, the assaulter had a weapon themselves. In the end the guy ran off down the street, the police had a very good description and that's the last I heard about it.
But ya know, carry on judging with little to no information, even when the post obviously says there is more to this story, but it's not the main focal point to the thread.
Granted, the original post wasn't that well worded, and I am not that great at being non-judgemental either but I'm no way that bad!0 -
Its quite different having this conversation with American relatives and friends in South Africa, especially SA, my wives best mate is a skinny cute blonde, but has shot and killed two burglers and one car thief. whilst living in Jo'berg.0

When there were kids hanging around the top of the alley (not too far from my house, we can see the end of it from the back bedroom window), I searched on youtube for a police siren and played it as loud as I could.
They didn't stay long enough to see if a car came round the corner...
Excellent deterrent in all sorts of situations!

I think SA has it right in terms of defending your house but I wouldn't wish to live in a country where guns were as freely available.0
