Have any of you tried the Tesco scan as you go?
Been doing this in Waitrose for years. It's not as popular in our local Tesco. They've reduced the handheld scanners by half since they introduced it a year or so ago.“You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time, but you can never please all of the people all of the time.”0 -
I also use self scan in Tesco and Waitrose as they save queuing and you can see exactly how much you are spending as you go round.
I've never had much of a problem with self service tills although occasionally have found they don't like price reduction labels.0 -
The scan as you shop are definitely the best! You actually pack as you go too, which saves even more time. I now will shop in the two shops locally that have this service, Tesco and Waitrose. However, the Waitrose rescan requires the whole shop to be done, but Tesco is just a few items.0

I loved the old greenboxes at Safeway, was a convienent way to shop. We were told at the time when they got rid of the self scan system that the batteries in the handsets were old and not keeping their charge (resulting in some people losing their whole shop halfway round). It was cheaper to abandon the whole system than it was to replace the batteries in the handsets. Also theft on high value items such as spirits apparently was always an issue.0 -

I still have some of those green boxes
I would imagine that any shop and scan system would have quite a high risk of people shoplifting. The battery excuse seems a bit bizarre though.0 -
A few issues with Sainsburys self scans
.1. They need to sort out their menus of fruit, veg, etc. I often see customers asking the assistant where onions, Bramley apples, baking potatoes and loose rolls are. One colleague who I speak to a lot, pointed out of the 20 items on the popular items list - (the first screen when you press look up item), the store does not sell 6 of them! Also how many customers would think to look under E for their satsumas called Easy Peelers?
2. The other week, my few items came to £4.85. Sp I put in 5p in coppers when the self scan counted this, then a £5 note, hoping to get 20p coin. Wrong! 20p in coppers! How stupid are the self scans to do this? The assistant said to her colleague who was on the till next to the self scans to swap my coppers for a 20p coin, which I did. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. Sainsbury's usually feels best and Asda not so good.
Particlarly with coupons, Sainsbury's will allow 1-2 to just be scanned and dropped in the slot, Asda want the staff to authorise every single coupon.
Sainsburys allow customers to scan up to £2.50 off coupons. So if you have £1 off a pizza coupon and a £1.30 brand match coupon, you can do these yourself. But if you have £2 coupon and a 60p coupon, the assistant has to do the 2nd one as goes over £2.50 But if you have a pre-paid newspaper one, it needs the assistant to put the price in.
If I go to Asda and have a coupon, I will queue at a manned till as they have ONE assustant over 17 tills - 10 baskets and 7 larger ones. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

The one that consistently irritates me is if you place your own carrier on the scale and press ok, you have to be very careful not to lift it up as you put the first item in. If you lift the bag momentarily it complains "unknown item" because it can't recognise that it's just the bag that's been lifted up and put back again, and you then have to wait for the assistant to reset it.
It's actually quicker to to pack after you have paid. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

Don't believe that for a second. From my experience of watching people using these machines under no case have I seen it to be quicker.
Scan - pack - pay.
