Supermarket Baskets Self Check outs. Best and worse.

Options
When we only do a top up shop we try and use the supermarket baskets (10 items or less) self check outs. There is usually a member of staff stationed in the area to help you. We have found Sainsburys self check out to be the best and Morrisons by far the worse. If you are lucky you will be able to scan 3 items before having to call a member of staff. Sainsbury's usually feels best and Asda not so good.

Particlarly with coupons, Sainsbury's will allow 1-2 to just be scanned and dropped in the slot, Asda want the staff to authorise every single coupon.

Often there are longer queues at the self service than at some of the ordinary checkouts, especially the basket only ones. Tesco and Sainsburys are generally good although occasionally have problems with any vouchers. Morrisons self service is a nightmare and have always have some problem, where a member of staff has had to come and clear. Wherever yo go if you buy any alochol you have to wait for a member of staff to come an authorise. A real nuisance if you purchasing a wine offer when there is more than one bottle involved, as staff are reluctant to stay whilst you scan each bottle so they come backwards and forwards. Nowadays if buying wine (which is not every visit!!) I will go to a "Manned" checkout.

Ive never had a problem with Morrisons, and there is always a member of staff on duty.

Asda is a problem, when you've finished your shopping, you have to call a member of staff to get your £1 parking fee deducted or stand for ages in the CS queue to get it back.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
  • I usually don't have problems with any of them except for occasionally Morrisons because there often isn't space for more than one bag to put your shopping in. I like the ones in Asda that have a massive space at the end for multiple bags, you could practically do a trolley shop at those tills.

When I'm buying alcohol (or anything else that requires authorisation), I just scan everything first and then a member of staff comes to authorise it right at the end when I'm ready to pay. I've never used a self service till which require individual authorisation for each item.

Have any of you tried the Tesco scan as you go?

You literally scan as you shop using a small hand held device and pack your bags in your trolley as you go. I particularly like the fact I can put frozen goods into a freezer appropriate bag so it stays frozen, and when you are finished go to the till, scan the barcode on the top of the till and your whole shop then downloads to the till. You can then pay and leave WITHOUT having to handball everything onto (and off) a conveyor belt.
Occasionally a member of staff will have to sample scan a random number of items in your trolley, you can only use this option if you are registered and have a club-card consequently Tesco know who you are, which apparently makes people think twice about accidentally not scanning what they pack! (That along with the fact you can be checked, which we have and it isn't any hassle)

We have found this to be, by far the easiest, fastest and most convenient way to do our shopping!
To anyone that tells you "There is no I in team" say no there isn't
But there ARE TWO I'S IN COMMISSION and I dont get paid "Team"

Morrisons have someone helpful, but because they are the only supermarket to use a different 'type' of system to the others It always flags up within like 3 seconds if your item isn't in a bag or a wrong weight etc etc.
    PK! :money:

I've given up using these things, since being told that the reason I was having problems with one was that I was doing what it told me to do.
If you fold it in half, will an Audi A4 fit in a Citroen C5? :)

Sounds like the shop and go system that Safeway had years ago, in the days of their green boxes instead of plastic bags.
