I don't think it's always about not wanting a job but coming to believe you will never find one.0

and applying for all types of work?0 -
I'm not sure if I agree with the looking for all types of work thing. Don't get me wrong, I'd do pretty much anything but I'm way too overqualified for NMW jobs. They wouldn't touch me with a barge pole (and dumbing down my cv wpuld leave me with a 15 year employment gap and no references)0

So what would you do if JSA was limited to say 2 years?
At 2 years, would you apply for any work then?0 -
Irrelevant to me as I have no intention of claiming anything - but even if I did it wouldn't change a thing. I would still be overqualified and they still wouldn't touch me with a barge pole. Please do not that I did say I'd do pretty much anything. What I'm saying is I'd never get those jobs and being desperate wouldn't change that reality one jot.0

I have been long term unemployed, I didnt set out to be long termer though, you can put in a great deal of effort in searching using transferable skills into other lines of work, there is only time that rejection after rejection starts hitting home and you start to do little applying, researching, you lose nearly all motivation and do the bare minimum.
I think its more to do with mindset, being long term unemployed there are no finances to relocate or commute unless you can get around that. Funding for retraining being cut in this financial climate, so those who are long termers even more obstacles to employment. I believe if you havent got a job in the first few months you are more than likely to be unemployed long term.0 -

What I'm trying to say is - not that I have much experience - is that people do have to be realistic about what they can get and that works on both sides of the skills range. Why would a shop employ someone who's only work experience is as a scientist? They would (very correctly) suspect I'd !!!!!! off as soon as I found something else. And it would be impossible for me to dumb down my cv so I had a realistic change of getting such a job.0
