    I do that too.

Keep doing it, a one off contact is not enough. See if they need any one off bits of work doing, offer to help out at year end. Build yourself up a profile that means you'll be the first one they call when something longer term comes up ;)

Narrow minded attitude? What does that mean? (sorry, being thick)

Not being prepared to consider training, commuting or relocating to find work were the sort of things I was thinking of.

Utter rubbish,I know people with masters degrees who are long term unemployed. In this economic climate it could be anybody even you.

We're talking (I assumed) about the long term unemployed, not just people who happen to be unemployed in the current economic climate.

I'm still getting used to LinkedIn. At the moment, I'm using it to find out the name of the HR person for companies but I suspect that I am under utilising it.

    • Set up job alerts
    • Search by job function not just by job title
    • Search also by town and or company
    • Chose to follow companies you may want to work for and you see the jobs posted first without searching
    • Do an update even if its add one word and take one off your profile once a week so it shows as an updated profile
    • Join groups - for exxample I am on hospitality ones and accounting one and some for agencies.
    • Read and or post comments on articles so people can see you. Makes people look at your profile.
    • Search staff members at companies and via their website get the email format for the email addresses and email the HR or team leader where you would want to work
    • Have a good stand out headline as this shows first when companies search for people.
Lots more things to do there too

'Do you think that there are certain types of people who are more likely to become long-term unemployed?'

Taking out those who just don't want to work anyway - those who give up looking regularly (there's a lot to said for being in the right place at the right time) and those not prepared to try something new (or 'beneath' them) and work for low (er) wages.

But you can't "give up looking regularly" can you? Not if you are a JSA claimants in any case.

Hmm. This is all very interesting. Thanks for your comments so far.

As regards to the wage thing - the field I am trying to get into will mean a massive drop in salary compared to what I'm earning now - but hopefully only in the short term. I guess there is a lot to be said for building things back up again.

Why would anyone give up? Unless they do not want to get a job.
