EE sales warning.

My BH went for his upgrade this year from T-Mobile. He was told he had to go onto EE now. They sold him a nice phone but on 4G not 3G as they said he had to. He said he didn't know how much data he would need as he'd had unlimited on his 3G. The sales guy said he would only need 1Gb at the most but I was dubious at that so it was doubled.
When husband had problems in first week with internet he was advised to turn off the WiFi
3 weeks into the 1st month he's run out of data.
Rang EE. They won't change contract he has to pay £5 for any 500mb over the limit. The guy we spoke to admitted you use far more data on 4G. He said at first because it was so fast - when I pointed out that the sales rep should have known this - he backtracked and said no you just use it more cos it's so fast.
They won't give us a transcript of the sales call saying they don't record all calls and it's for inhouse use only.
Please be warned

4g does not use more data .
Users may well use a lot more data than they would on 3g as they spend longer do more downloading watching more videos than on 3g .
But that is their choice to do so .0 -

Its been a long time since any network offered unlimited data, there is always a limit usually under a fair use clause. The guy we spoke to admitted you use far more data on 4G. 4G WILL NOT make you use more data for any given action. It should be faster and you may use the device more (and so use more data) because its faster but for any given action the amount of data used will be the same.
Could it be its a new device and he's taken updates over 3/4G not Wifi, or downloaded new apps, taking this first month over the limit0 -
That may be the case. However, he was advised to switch off the WiFi which he would have normally used. If I'd known they'd told him that I would have realised they were just trying to up the data usage at an earlier stage.
Just warning people to be totally certain of amounts potentially used before entering into contracts.
And of course, to use free WiFi where possible0 -
Turning off wifi makes no sense at all (and has no impact on 3G/4G performance), I hope you've turned wifi back on?====0

Turn the wifi back on and use it where possible.
Does he get free BT openzone wifi? I do on EE (and I get Cloud hotspots through having sky).
Between those and home wifi the 1MB allowance is quite a lot.
The camera on my phone was set to automatically back up to the cloud. That was using a lot of data so turn that off and look at what is "allowed" to run in the background.
Also download the EE smartphone App. It tells you where you are on data usage and will help you not go over.Officially in a clique of idiots0 -
yes it's now turned back on. We too have Sky Cloud. Thank you for the info on the EE smartphone App. It will be useful finding out what is going on and additional hotspots will be great.
I know we seem dated but he was with T-Mobile on a great contract for 18 mths until his phone packed up a few weeks ago. The 'upgrade' apparently had to be with EE. I'm still on the old contract and worried about changing now.0 -

All TM and Orange customers are being migrated to EE as you phone for an upgrade as the two legacy companies no longer exist.
However you can keep the old tariff, but you'll not get a new phone, and keep paying the same contract rate. You could just get a new phone SIM FREE and use the old tariff but probably cost more overall than getting a new contract when you think that your tariff contains some element of paying the subsidy back in its monthly cost.0 -

Hmm , not quite sure how correct that is, only last week I upgraded my wifes tariff, was on an old orange animal contract, they offered an EE contract, but I chose to go to an unlimited Data Tmobile contract. Only thing that I found a little irritating was, that although I was with Orange, I had to start a new contract as they were not allowed to migrate straight from one to the other(orange to tmoblie).Copy from one, it’s plagiarism; copy from two, it’s research.0 -
The most likely reason is that there is no way on their system to do that. You can, however, move a T-Mobile to EE easier as they run on the same back-end system.Only thing that I found a little irritating was, that although I was with Orange, I had to start a new contract as they were not allowed to migrate straight from one to the other(orange to tmoblie).
It's simply not true that you can't upgrade people on Orange or T-Mobile to their equivalent plans.
Granted there maybe restrictions (ie. no more 18m contracts, may have to stay on same legacy 24m plan or handset cost maybe more) but to simply say that you can't keep a T-Mobile plan and have to move to EE is nothing more than the salesman trying to reach their target for conversion - there is a lot of pressure within EE for people to flog the 4G plans.
Data sizes will always be the same regardless of method of download (3g, 4g, wifi). ie. - a 7mb mp3 is always 7mb.0 -
I've spent quite a lot of time in my local EE shop lately, as T-mobile blocked my IMEA. Still trying to find out why. I have an Orange pay monthly sim. Got quite friendly with the Manager, who told me although the stores are integrated, the back end businesses are being run as 3 separate companies with their own call centres, staff, and IT systems! He had to phone all 3 call centres to try to get the block on my phone lifted.
Back to data usage, I have 250 Mb per month on a sim only deal (£7.50 a month), and find its plenty. I use WiFi whenever its available. But then I use my phone for sensible stuff like e-mail and browsing, not streaming.0
