Two statistics that stick with me are with regard to calories:

    - a regular pot of supermarket yoghurt contains more calories than a regular pot of supermarket chocolate mousse.
    - a glass of fruit juice has more calories than a glass of Coke.

Makes me laugh when people say they're eating "healthily" by eating yoghurt and drinking fruit juice. They're not as "good" :(

One of the things about the fasting diet I'm on is you need to be careful how tightly you restrict calories on non-fast days. Otherwise you can undereat. Some 'conventional'diet advice can easily put you into very large deficits...

I don't drink much fruit juice, and I don't eat many yoghurts... I regard fruit juices as empty calories.

I've never eaten one. They weren't around when I was young; then they appeared ... and I heard the phrase "live culture" and it just made me feel sick .... I just imagined mould and maggots crawling around.

So I've never had one :)

Ah ... an Englishman's home is his castle ... when the missus is out, or when he's in the garden and she can't see/hear him being treated like a Lord :)

Whereas I am the undisputed Lady of my manor house :D

I have a collection of shoes lying just inside the front door. Eventually I'll put some kind of shoe rack downstairs for the shoes I wear regularly (my other shoes live at the bottom of my wardrobe). Who knows when that'll happen though.

When my parents were last here, my mum ordered me not to buy any more plants. I think this was mostly so that she can bring yellow sticker ones that she picks up (the number of plants they brought with them last time was hilarious, my dad's car was like Mary Poppins's carpetbag).

I had a little accident earlier this afternoon in Homebase :o I felt sorry for all the little wilted plants that were lingering on the reduced shelf. They all follow the theme of the plants I've bought/ grown so far (make things you can eat). Hopefully they'll perk up with a bit of tlc. If they don't at least I didn't spend a lot on them.

I like yogurts. I usually have one with breakfast. Not spotted any maggots yet...

I mentioned it because the harm to others part of the graph is quite high and only a fraction less than smoking. Hence my fascetious comment about the munchies. Not harm to the individual, but to others.

In terms of Pastures's point about crime etc, that's the same for other drugs too, but they score lower.

I don't smoke dope and don't advocate for it, just want to understand why the negative effect on others is so big and what the number is made up of.

However the reason I want to know is purely because I'm putting off that least enjoyable of Sunday experiences - the weekly visit to Tesco.
After 30 years of addiction my brother is finally doing rehab. The effect onhim, his paranoid schizophrenia, his being sectioned, his wife killing herself, the removal of his children, his leeching off my mum, his loss of his career. Oh and the head and neck cancer which has cooked his taste buds and crumbling his jaw.

    There are consequences.

I know you are as old as the hills but I kind of suspect that yoghurt may have been around even longer?
    I think....

    That's awful Spirit.

I had a relative who lost his life to lung cancer young (50s) as a result of smoking dope, but your post is the first that I've read in terms of effect on those around. Thank you.

Nope I clearly remember when it first appeared in adverts on the telly. Late 60s early 70s maybe. The brand and slogan was "Ski- the full of fitness food". It was marketed as a Swiss product rather than Bulgarian or Indian or whatevr it is really. MInd you I also remember when link sausages were first advertised - might have been Walls - all the sausage we had till then was square slices.

In the early 60s the national diet was distinctly beige I can tell you.:D

That's about my max... but it's dropping off. I think the last time I had one unit was over a year ago, when I met a NP in a pub.
An unusually wine filled few days for me...although I have had beer too .
We are ambling our way back from Cornwall. Now on Dartmoor, had an unsuccessful search for a pub dinner so ate a kebab.

However it is being washed down with a bottle of Fleurie. We have four remaining bottles with us... Champagne. Syrah. Merlot. Pouilly Fume. We get home Tues. it is my birthday weds, and we are off to France on Thursday & Friday to celebrate ...and buy wine.

Not sold as a commonplace foodstuff in the UK to regular people.

Ski yoghurt were the first to start advertising/promoting in the mid-60s. Stuff had a slower take-up back then, so it was about another 10 years before I saw a pot (not on a telly advert). Parents certainly never bought any; it wasn't in school dinners. So I had no access to it.
