But that's going round... you can step out of your boat at any point and get in a rocket and go up.... because up is there and exists.....
And yes, it doesn't have an edge - you can't go to the edge of the universe any more than you can sail to the edge of the world
If I sail round the world I end up where I started, but there's other stuff beyond that.... up/down, planets, stars.... and finally ... the edge of the Universe.... so, there must be something as there cannot be nothing. If nothing can exist, if nothing does exist, then what contains nothing?

Thinking about the edge of the universe makes my head spin. A bit like thinking about what makes us 'alive' rather than just a mixture of chemicals. Ask a bit to much for my little brain to comprehend

I read somewhere that what makes us human is that we know we're not immortal.... no other animal (apparently) knows this. We are the only ones that understand death and know it is inevitable ....
Animals might mourn their dead mates... but they don't understand the process etc.0 -

It's hard to know what animals know or think because you can't ask them...“The ideas of debtor and creditor as to what constitutes a good time never coincide.”

As an aside I never understood why a collapsed star would cause a black hole because gravity is so strong that nothing could escape it while all the mass in the universe would be able to just escape the gravitational effect.
Are you certain - I thought missing matter and therefore the possibility of a 'big crunch' were still on tbc list....I think....0 -
Er... but everything was in the same place. Then it started to expand. At some point, the entire mass of the universe must have existed within the same space as a star.
Ah, now I see what you were saying. Thanks for clarifying. Presumably the energy involved in the big bang was much much bigger than any energy source since.PasturesNew wrote: »But that's going round... you can step out of your boat at any point and get in a rocket and go up.... because up is there and exists.....

That's because you're thinking in 3D. Imagine you were a 2D creature living on the surface of the Earth, thinking it was flat, and unable to imagine a third dimension. You wouldn't be able to imagine the "up there" direction at all. You would say, I know I can go left and right round a circle, but what if instead of going left or right I go forwards, away from the circle, to the ocean, and beyond the ocean to the edge of the world, but what's beyond that...
Similarly, since we experience life in only 3D, we can't imagine a 4th dimension (or quite possibly more than just a 4th) in which the universe could be curved round on itself so you could end up back where you started without finding an edge.Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Point them to https://www.AtaLoss.org which does for bereavement support what MSE does for financial services, providing links to support organisations relevant to the circumstances of the loss & the local area. Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

Sounds exhausting. Well done for surviving it. How long did it take? Did you have the boys as well?
Would love to join you for a drink and a chocolate based pudding. Why hasn't anybody invented the Star Trek transporter yet?
I hate unknowns too. Sending hugs. :grouphug:
Nearly 3 hours there (no stop) and 3 hours back (1 stop).
Josh stayed at home, youngest was dropped off at his friend's house on our way out of the town, he was picked up by my brother four hours later and they had him at theirs until we got home. They didn't mind doing that as the alternative was them driving mum and dad to Sussex! We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.0 -

I guess the bigger question is: if the Universe is expanding... what is it expanding into? Are we still just a sneeze in something much bigger....?
I can't envisage "nothing" or "infinity".... I used to imagine the end of the Universe when I was about 5-8.... and then thought about taking one more step and what'd be there... and the answer has to be there's something there..... so there is no end, but if you can't have an end, it's unfathomable.
AIUI the way to think of it is like this.
Imagine a map of the world being the universe and then think of the map being printed on a rubber sheet. As the universe expands, it's like the rubber sheer is stretching more and more.0 -

But if you have a rubber map ...it has edges and beyond those edges are your hands pulling, your kitchen table, your kitchen, your house, your garden, village, county, country .....
There's always "something beyond the edges"

Well for a start, the universe(s) may well be infinite. If not then you couldn't go beyond it/them as there is no beyond.0 -

If your dog is sitting by the Bonio and mini Bonio tins and it is day time, he is thinking "mini Bonio".
If it is 8pm and he comes and looks at you, he is thinking "please can I have my big Bonio?"
If it is 8.05pm or later and he comes and paws you he is thinking "please can I have my big Bonio, now".
If you are the dog's dad and you have been away, when the dog hears a diesel engined car pull up outside the dog thinks "that's my dad".0
