Evening all. Not doing very well, are we?

I think it's not that we're not liked, it's just that we don't have any obvious and strong geographical affinity that some other countries have. So we lose out to those affinities even if there's no overt hostility towards us.

I've read a couple of articles in the papers about the transphobic hate that has been directed towards the Austrian singer; it's quite brave to put yourself into a situation where over a hundred million people are watching you.

For those of us who are not enthused over all things Eurovision (sorry) is there anything I should read between the end of page 71 and here?

Miro glad your sight test was without the problems feared.

    71??

How many posts per page have you got yours set to? I thought 40 was the max, and even that has p71 weeks ago.
Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Point them to https://www.AtaLoss.org which does for bereavement support what MSE does for financial services, providing links to support organisations relevant to the circumstances of the loss & the local area. (Link permitted by forum team)
Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

Happy to tie the best result Armenia had, and also happy for Conchita, she is amazing!

    See you in Vienna!

ETA: Michaels, few posts from Lydia and others, but apart from that, no.

It is, but this is Eurovision and it was always going to be that she was going to be accepted in this. I do agree though that it must be tough and their is no need for people to hate.

The bookies were not wrong, the three favourites in the bookies were the top 3 - they are rarely wrong.

I also read that Molly had no airplay in most countries in Europe and very little in others, whereas other acts are already hit singles. She never stood a chance and 17th is as good as she could expect.

Still, Vienna will be a new experience.

    No, not really :rotfl:

Thanks. Just Thursday's bloods to worry about now and then take it from there, but yes, todays sight test has lifted my mood a little.

Sadly, one of my workplaces still think it's funny. They obviously have no idea.

Wow, one quiet evening away from the NP thread and I've missed pages!

Think Austria will get it to be honest, the song along with the act as opposed to Sweden who was just the song.

Conchita was bloody amazing live. I can't begin to explain what it's like to be there and hear that. It was electrifying.

This is an extremely important point. When people hear Russia being booed, it's easy to think that it's all about the Ukraine situation, but its a very small part of it. What this year's Eurovision has been about more than anything else is the sexual politics of Europe.

The reason that Russia was being booed was the ongoing situation there which has seen gays beaten up; top athletes saying that being gay isn't natural; then you had the threat of bans in Sochi for the Olympics. Rumour was (this was covered on Danish TV) that the Russian TV company was threatening not to show Conchita at all and the European Broadcasting Union told them that they'd be thrown out of the contest if they did.

I'd say from being there that at least 1/3rd of the attendees yesterday and I'm sure it will be similar today will be from the LGBT community. The backdrop to Eurovision this year has been that while there have been really fun events and it has been peaceful, the Danish National Front marched today in Copenhagen and the anti-fascist groups counter-protested.

I'm really glad that Conchita won. Not only is it a great song, it is a really important one. The lyrics to the song give voice to a movement, one that as a heterosexual married woman living in a liberal democracy I can take for granted, but gays living in Eastern Europe can't. This shows they can have hope for more equality. Countries that would never, ever have given points to an act like Conchita have done so and really changed things.

The bookies get most Eurovision stuff pretty much on the money. Except for the UK's position in the contest, but then they are British bookies.

I don't know who gets airplay where tbh. It doesn't surprise me that Molly didn't get coverage in Europe. It was a better song. But there's still not evidence that the UK is taking the contest seriously enough.

    Vienna will be great though.

I think that the Common Linnets (Netherlands) will be the act that gets radio airplay in the UK though.
