This holiday has not been a great success.
A lot of effort has been made to ensure we have a good time; too much effort in fact and I just want to escape.
Feeling slightly edgy at having to amuse myself for days while OH was working, I coped. Then we come out to the mountains with some work people who decided that they have to entertain us at every opportunity, so seriously smart restaurants booked, days planned with snowy activities and OH gets ill and has been in bed for 2 days.
These people have really put themselves out for us, but I have been caught with having to join them at every occasion alone. The food has been so difficult here, all the menus consist of very few items that could be vaguely described as kosher and the food combinations are overbearing.
We have had to pull out of going up the mountain and other stuff and they refused to do this stuff without us.
So I have all the days exploring the are with them, which is sweet of them but I feel bad that their weekend in the mountains has been spoilt.
Their efforts have been so overwhelming eg dinner on the first night midweek, one of the wives asked if I like art, I give a non committal reply that I like some modern stuff; she cancels all her stuff for the next day to take me to 2 art galleries. Thoughtful to the extreme.
They also refuse to share the bills for meals and won't let me pay. So that is embarrassing. I also doubt they will put this weekend on expenses as OH is technically his line manager, so awkward. I pulled out of dinner last night because of this money issue (and the fact that this rich food s becoming unbearable).
Will catch up soon.
Lost in translation? Americans are extremely hospitable, probably so much so thatBrits get extremely uncomfortable about how much they are putting themselves out as it creates in us a feeling of owing a favour back that is unlikely to be repaid.
Have a safe journey home.I think....0 -

Yep. Lurker (of very long standing) though, so maybe that doesn't count.
Of course you count. Welcome out of lurkdom. :hello:
If you've been lurking for ages I'm sure you know the drill. If you feel able to tell us anything beyond being gay and a lurker, do tell us the usual stuff: mushrooms? inner or outer Herts? Jewish? scientist?
Edit: I see you did actually post a few times last May and told us you're fond of mushrooms. Was it only last May that we were on NPT8? This thing is speeding up, I think.PasturesNew wrote: »Did you par boil the daughinoise before layering them on? That's what's best to do ...
I love dauphinoise. We have them every so often in the canteen at school and they are lush. I need to learn to make them. Any NP who are good at them, please post recipes. Thanks.Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.0 -

I recall back in about 1980 my 70+ years old grandmother made her one and only trip to the US to see family. Her daughter had married a US serviceman in 1945 and gone over there to live, then passed away (no idea when) some time later .... so she went over to see her grandchildren for the first time ever - they'd have been about 30 by then I guess.
I remember one story from the time - she got fed up with it as they threw parties almost every day to introduce her to family/friends/neighbours etc.... and she was desperate to come home and have a cup of tea.0 -
To the various people saying they're not concerned about other people's sexuality ... well, that doesn't usually stop us discussing stuff and comparing views and experiences, does it? I mean, which of us would say we're "concerned" about other people's views on mushrooms?Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Mary Berry Cooks did a dauphinoise potato topped cottage pie this morning on the telly.
It involved: par-boiling for 4 minutes the sliced potatoes then layering the spuds and cream and then topping with cheese and baking. I made some notes but the recipe is here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/cottage_pie_with_31714
You can still get it on iplayer - it was towards the end of the programme.... and she always gives more insight/tips with her recipes than you see written down on the BBC recipe page. You can watch that from this page: http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/programmes/b0403ysj0 -

Exactly.
Also, i think that what we do seem to know if through experience is intolerance is often out of lack of discussion.
( not that I was implying that nice people are intolerant, just that I'm saying I think talking and learning through others experiences is as valid in this area as any other)0 -

The coffe was free as I spent over £25 at the butchers, that cake had rather a lot of butter iceing and jam...that might have been my problemSorry to hear that SpiritHope you're ok, and that there isn't too much damage to the car.
It is a 22 month old BMW. It is not going to be cheap:(PasturesNew wrote: »Which came first?
The weird feeling as I drove down the A road, a bit euphoric or drunk. My behviour was odd in the aftermath...it would be in my nature to go straight home or park up in the square. Instead I carried on with my original plan:(
Lydia....my family are not looking after me., they were just looking at me.OH has headed back out to the stag do, DD has been soaking her injuries in a hot bath. I have cooked myself lamb chops and spinach for dinner, cried off form the curry in the pub, and said I will go along later, DD is not coming as she will hunker down with Ibuprofen. Will have to drive OHs Passat which I hate or if I check my levels and they are too high I will take a torch/ walk.
