That could be a bit harsh. "I'm sorry John, you're perfect for the job in every other way, but we can't hire you because you look too much like the boss."
...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.

I'm thinking that it would not be nice about the boss, too, IYSWIM ;)

Sort of Counselling-Lite... I agree it's great to have somewhere to moan. :) I think it's a good preventative. But just a warning that if you're (this is the generic "you" not any person specific stuff) past the preventative stuff while it can still be good to moan it still may need professional help. Speaking from my experience. Post parental deaths I was totally do-lally, helped by some online friends, but it took serious Counselling for me to begin to get myself together... And I'm not there yet, soon as the next couple of complicated weeks are over I'm going to make appt with my Counsellor ASAP.

Oh yeah, and there's the hoarding tendency coming to the front too. Part and parcel of it all I guess. :(

At my next appointment with mine (next week) I'll be talking about whether the effect that my burn-out is having on my parenting is contributing to DD's hoarding disorder, and how I should proceed from here.

No. How do you describe a surveyor? They might be useful to buyers because they don't know houses but they're useless to the trade. There are people that specialise far more in everything that a surveyor looks at, I guess a surveyors job is simply to signpost you.

:o I know a lot of surveyors and they're all lovely, but...

Surveys have been very very useful to me.

The first house I had surveyed was this one (just a homebuyers). As a result of the survey I pointed things out to the vendors as part of my reasons for not agreeing to their price. When they remarketed later, they had fixed the major (and expensive) issues that the survey had identified - for example completely replacing the flat roof.

The second house I had surveyed I had a full structural survey because the house was older and I wanted to do an extension. I pulled out of the purchase on the basis of the survey and am so very very glad I did.

The third house I pulled out of on the basis of the planning situation, so the survey wasn't particularly useful.

Perfectly legal, though. "Looking like the boss" isn't a protected characteristic, so it's OK to discriminate on that ground ... unless the reason for a particular candidate being rejected for looking like the boss was due to the candidate's ethnic origin, in which case it could be construed as indirect racism and therefore wouldn't be allowed.

Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

A friend has a second home in Cyprus. They have let another good friend use the villa and car regularly, three or more times a year. This has manifested into the good friend treating the villa as their own and making "their" weeks available to their wider family. Recently they were pressuring the villa's owners into not going as their daughter, her partner and two friends wanted to go at that time and the villas owners can go anytime. These generous people have said no, and that they need to rethink how they share/make available their second home on a more formal footing.

He should ask his mate whether tails should wag dogs or is it the other way round! As dg says that's astounding!

They do say "no good deed should go unpunished"

Private schooling? I can't be ideological about it.

DS goes to sixth form this year so that's a gigantic drain on our finances stopping. He got an offer from a good local school today and I dropped off an application to another good local school. They're comps in a grammar school borough but in this borough there's no bad schools that I know of, and they're well-performing

DD went to grammar school in walking distance and it was brilliant for her.

I have several of these IKEA pine plant stands as little side tables, which are collapsible. Absolutely great - don't think they still sell them, but the second link is their current version.

I prefer the round one ... I've added that to my Ikea list, but I am far too frugal to spend £9 on that, so will keep an eye out at car boots :)

Hadn't even thought about it from that point of view - it could, however, also be indirect sex discrimination, as (I presume) people are more likely to look like Mr Doozer if they are male?

Should have bought a bigger house, away from London .... with a sound-proofed and entirely separate "nanny wing".

Not much point, without a live-in nanny to match, though? Infant's big enough and ugly enough to break out of soundproof wing, I fear. And Sam lives in her own perfectly nice house near Chewy.

What's your reason for being up so horribly early, PN?

I seem to have nodded off last night .... then woke up and it was dark, so I checked the clock and it was 5am ... so I thought I might as well have a coffee, turn on the telly and get online :)

I am compiling a specific list of questions for my solicitor to ask the homeowner in writing ... need to write that list this weekend.... it'll be stuff like:

    • Have you ever been burgled, or had any attempted burglaries
    • Has the garden or building surrounds ever had surface water flooding (as the garden slopes a little towards the house)
    • Have you ever had to seek professional advice/experts to investigate or pursue any building issues that might have resulted in an NHBC claim
    • Have any feral brats pee'd you off

Need to sort out the exact wording... if anybody can suggest housey irritations I could add to the list, I welcome them.

When I did a driveby last night (while out looking for chips) it looked like two kids were playing in the car park - but they didn't look feral and it wasn't in "my part" of the car park. There were also four "dole dossers" standing/chatting alongside the entrance wall when I went for the 2nd viewing. You can't do a driveby of the rear/car park as it can't be seen from the road and if you pull in it's just parking, so you are noticeable to everybody....

My plot is a corner one, which can go either way of being "the place they always get drawn to", or "the corner they'd never play in"

There's no real neighbour issues of note as there's only a neighbour on one side who has also just sold.....

Has anyone vandalised the house in any way?
