80's fancy Dress ideas?

Hi all,

not sure if its the right place (sorry if anyone objects)

Im off to an 80's weekend at Butlins again and need an original idea for a fancy dress outfit?

Last year i did the usual madonna one night, neon the next night and then rockers the last night but need something different this time.

Any ideas peeps?

One thought i did have as i could make myself into a lego woman, cardboard boxes, yoghurt pots spray painted, but would be grateful for more suggestions.

thanks

  • If I were you I'd do rockers, then neon, then Madonna the last night!

Are you going with the same friends as last time? Could you do a clothes swap so you get different costumes without having to buy three new outfits each?!

Or how about Barbie in a box? I saw a wonderful costume someone made out of cardboard, easy to get out of and she just wore her prettiest dress. Or dress up in riding clothes and you're Horseriding Cindy.

See if you can get your hands on a Global Hypercolour t-shirt and a shell suit. Those two things alone epitomised the 80's for me, more so the shell suit but the t-shirts were great (unless you were female in which case it usually just highlighted your boobs...which as a male worked just fine for me! lol)

Goth was quite the thing in the 80s but people might not 'get' it. :p You could go as Boy George. Or one of Wham - white jeans, white Go Go Tshirt, big old hair? Or see if you can find some snow-wash and go double denim. Bananarama or Dexy's style with dungarees? New romantic frilly shirt style with funky make up?

I hate a lot of the 80s stuff in fancy dress shops/websites. It's just not what it was like at all!

I remember pixie boots, white stilettoes, crimped hair, dungarees, legwarmers, monochrome, even some tartan at one stage. Maybe not all together though lol!

  • Ra-ra skirts are a stand out 80s thing for me.
How about going as a Green Goddess type character. The aerobics craze seemed to take hold on 80s breakfast telly.
    Have a great time!
From Starrystarrynight to Starrystarrynight1 and now I'm back...don't have a clue how!

Well said! I had the odd bit of neon but more accessories than whole outfits. Pastel colours were popular, rah rah skirts rather than tutus. I was more of a goth type in the early 80's, there were lots of Cure/Echo and the Bunnymen wannabes at art college.

Yes I might have had a pair of neon ankle socks but more likely pastel to match whatever top I had on. I would wear things like black/red or black/blue checked shirt with a thin black tie, cropped (as in rolled up) loose trousers, brogue type shoes, spikey hair but not coloured as folks would never have allowed any of that malarkey.... or drop waisted dresses or pencil skirt and belted baggy blouse, sling backs and plenty of colourful make up.

Lads would have on army type long coats, leather trousers (or fake ones!), baggy shirts and lots and lots of hair product. :-) Oh and there were loads of 'flat tops' in my area doing the 50's James Dean look. So wanted to go out with a flat top (any flat top, not fussy) but never did. Those were the days, ha ha.
