Wow thanks for all the replies!
She will occasionally eat marmite sandwiches but hates all, other fillings:spready cheese, ham, cheese, peanut butter are all a big no no!
I have been looking at the bento box ideas already and really like the idea
    .
we get free school meals at the mo so she has that 4/5 days a week but I don't know how much she eats and she always comes home starving even after saying she really liked it and ate it all.

She loves home made pizza,we usually eat it all so there are no left overs so I will make extra next time and see if she will have it cold.

    Thanks guys!

Have you checked with the school that she's getting/eating a full meal? My DD2 got really confused with school dinners when she first started and always came home starving. She didn't realise she could have macaroni and salad from the salad bar or if she had chicken she could have chicken and potatoes.

The dinner ladies were so used to super fussy children that they tend to only give the kids what they ask for. Also the children are allowed bread and fruit with their meal which she didn't realise. It'd all been explained to her on the first day, but she'd forgotten after going packed lunches for a few weeks.

Sort of fried rice thing but cold.
Cooked rice; scambled egg; veges; bits of bacon or chicken
    Whatever she likes.

Savoury cake (made with cheese, onion etc... instead of sweet ingredients)

    Quiche

hummous with pitta and breadsticks to dip in.

home made mini pasty (make in bulk and freeze)

Bread sausage rolls (so healthier than pastry and easy to make)

    Stuffed pepper

    savoury filled pancake?

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

Ok not got round to making it yet..... bought a sushi mat, seaweed and rice in sainsburys and plan to make some sushi style bits but using tuna and a little bit of sweeet chilli sauce as kids love that. My eldest 2 have tried it shop bought and seem quite keen. Have seen it down on youtube and seems easy (famous last words and failed pintrest crafts spring to mind).

Love the bento ideas and recently bought but not used (see the theme) a mold for boiled eggs/rice makes them teddy and rabbit shaped. boil egg while its warm put in mold close it and put in cold water sounds easy. Also got some cut tiny animal headed bottles for putting sauces in.

Don't forget that from September all infant children will be entitled to a free school dinner.

OP, although she may say she is eating it all, it may be worth having a word with the office and asking the supervisors to check for a week and go from there.
  • I was just going to suggest the Thermos food jar as mentioned in a previous post.

I have a sandwich hater...only thing she will eat is egg mayo, otherwise I do small frankfurters, mac cheese or tuna pasta in the thermos. Heat thermos up with hot water, heat food in microwave, put together and by lunchtime food is a perfect temp.

Other suggestions (from my 6 yr old) are :
waffle with small container maple syrup (!)
    breakfast pancakes cold
    crackers.

I loved it when we lived in UK and school dinners were available...
  • If she likes the cold home made pizza an easy and quick think me and DH sometimes have for our packed lunches is what we call a pretend calzone. Make homemade pizzas on a wrap but only put it on half of the wrap, then fold it over and pop it in the oven for 5-10 mins. They're really yummy and we usually just use a tomato puree for the base then add anything we want- it's a good way of getting some of our 5 a day in- stick pineapple, sweetcorn, mushroom, onion in and top with cheese.

I am going to try this for my lunch, sounds yummy! :D

My daughter uses her thermos every day. The only downside she finds is that some of the girls do turn their noses up at it. When you are sat at a table where lots of kids are eating basic sandwiches and crisps day in day out and don't get a variety, they do tend to make an issue of someone eating something different. Admittedly my daughter's favourite dish looks like vomit, but you might want to forewarn yours to have the confidence to ignore what others might say.

I have a bento box for her as well that tends to get used in summer but not as much as the thermos. Lots of picky bits like cherry tomatoes, cucumber, cheese, breadsticks, nachos, pasta salads, cous cous, leftover roast chicken.

It is not unusual for children to be starving by 3.15pm, even if they have eaten their lunch.

I would suggest that she has a really good breakfast - porridge ideally, or eggs plus followed fruit at break time. I would then take her snack to eat on the way home. This would mean that lunch becomes less important, if she is eating so sparingly.

  • Cool thanks everyone some great ideas!
We just had parents evening and there was a questionnaire and comments sheet so I did put about it would be nice to get feedback about how much of the hot meals she eats.
I'm going to look for a bento style lunchbox and put lots of picky things, with a small pot for tomato sauce, she will eat just about anything smothered In the stuff yuck!
Actually I might try sending pot of sauce with her sandwiches as she will usually eat sandwiches if they are dipped in sauce wether it's marmite sandwiches or tuna blegh!!
