This tends only to be a problem in Europe.

I've had places try it on me in the Middle East and Far East so definitely not only Europe.

I got a Clarity card as we are off to France on Sunday. I went into the Halifax today to check on charges and was told if I use the card to withdraw cash at an ATM, I would be charges a 3% surcharge as well as interest from the day of withdrawing the cash.

Everyone here seems to be saying there is no 3% charge, just interest, of about 0.25% per month, which is more than offset by the better exchange rate obtained by using the card?

Am I right, or is the guy in the Halifax right?

    Thanks!

The guy in the Halifax was talking rubbish. See their website https://www.halifax.co.uk/creditcards/low-rate-no-fee/clarity-card/

It's about 0.25% per week not month, see above. That's if you get the 12.9% APR.

    Thanks,
I thought it was a bit strange. So definitely cheaper to withdraw cash on the card if it's paid off a week or two later?

Yes, that's right. Wait until you get home then balance immediately. The following month you will have a tiny interest charge to play.
  • Apologies if this is in the wrong place (newbie) but ... got the Clarity card, ready to use it this weekend. Did Travel Money Maximiser to find out how to get good rate on £1000 of Euros to take with me and it offered the Clarity card. But how do I get the CASH?! Halifax website won't let me order it online as I don't have another account. Am surely being stupid ...

Errr... You simply wait until you get to Euroland, walk to the first cash machine you see then withdraw as much money you want on the card - though it may not be wise to take out all £1000 worth in one go in case you lose it. I tend to take out €200 every few days.
