Tesco ..... Again

I have just had the misfortune to take something back to Tescos (Hard drive) - product line been discontinued, hard drive dead as a dodo. I bought it for my DS birthday 4 months ago. I spoke to the manufacturers to see if there was anything they could do, they told me it was dead as a dodo and I need to take it back to Tesco and get my money back.

I paid for it by debit card and they were going to give me my money back by debit card but I didn't have it on me so I asked for the money back. They had the hard drive, the receipt for the thing and details of my name and address. They said no, they had to give the money back by debit card so home I trailled to get my cards. I also had a look on Tesco's website about refunds. This is what it said

"If you have arranged for the refund to go back onto your payment card, it will usually take 3-5 business days for the refund to appear in your account, depending on your card issuer. Cheque refunds will usually take 14 days to arrive. Payment for the replacement item will be taken immediately"

This is unreasonable. I went back to Tescos and had a discussion with their electrical manager as to why they can take payments out of my account immediately but refund payments within 3-5 working days thus depriving me of money which is mine. She agreed to give me the money at that point but has anybody else had dealings like this and does anybody else think it is unfair or is it just me ?

They say 3-5 days to cover themselves it appears as quick as a debit does if you had bought something.

As for refunding on the card this is correct its to prevent fraud.

Dosent look like they have done anything wrong IMO

    It's the same everywhere.

I think saying your being deprived of money is an exaggeration. You've already spent it, a refund will get back to your account, the times above being a maximum. They don't set the times. They don't decide to take the money straight away, sometimes it doesn't anyway. Both refunds and payments are done in exactly the same way so will take more or less exactly the same time.

All merchants accepting debit/credit cards have to process refunds back onto the card that was used, that is part of their merchant agreement.

Refunds are processed in exactly the same way as payments, and just as debit card transactions can take around three working days to appear on your statement, so can refunds.

This isn't Tesco setting the rules, it's the way the banks work.

Have you not picked up that this isn't a Tescos policy and how paying on a card works!

I wish their customers would use there brains first before complaining!

I do find on odd occasion delay to get back on the card but I agree with a previous poster - if this is a security issue I am agreed all the way about refunds. Yes, it may take a couple of days. I only put on debit card (actually mostly) as I do pay as I go! If I had a doubt my balance wouldn't use it. I only pay with debit if funds are there. Also and can manage for next few days as you never know quite when transactions come off. My personal and experience only. If I have serious doubts I use my credit card - only twice in last two years and that was abroad and better to use than my debit card.. I manage my finances, I don't go into debt but I do know some folk have difficulties sometimes with finance.

I don't think this is a Tesco issue but just general policy.

Not only have Tesco not done anything wrong but they are compelled to act in this manner as other posters have pointed out, however I'm not sure the "helpful" assistant who handed over cash did!
I'm one of the first to dig Tesco in the ribs when they deserve it, but on this occasion they don't I'm afraid.

If Tesco (or any company) didn't make a profit, they wouldn't be there to serve their customers - no matter how poorly !
