I've used railway sleeper underneath a couple of sheds. They show no sign of rotting.

Ive seen some youtube videos of carpenters plane the sleepers and produce some beautiful furniture from it. I've watch all of these videos: http://www.youtube.com/channel/UCiEk4xHBbz0hZNIBBpowdYQ

Sadly I think railway sleepers would be very expensive - even from a reclaimed wood seller.

One of my sheds is mounted on some lovely red jarrah hardwood sleepers. Used, but you can get them new.

If you are going to use them inside the house, you need to be happy with the creosote smell. It never seems to go away. My wife had a sleeper coffee table. When we married and she moved in with me, it was relegated to the patio.

I got them cheap off eBay.

just realised I was probably being too generous with my calculations. I was planning on full coverage for sleepers for the 6' by 8' floor.

I think I can just use 4 x 6' sleepers and space them out. Still tenner a pop but it is more likely to be as "concrete" as possible compared to pallets which will have give to them.

I saw it done very well with treated 6x4s and no fines gravel for free drainage. That was on a big shed too.

Out of curiosity how much does a full size sleeper weigh?

A standard British 8'6" long, 10" wide and 5"-6" thick railway sleeper weighs around 75kg.

They are a two man lift.
