Charity donations instead of christening gifts?

I would much rather have the simplicity of making a donation to the chosen charity than finding a suitable gift. And if I were to christen my children, thats what I would do, in fact thats what I plan to do instead of wedding gifts.
EDIT: just to add, (even though this rant/example is more to do with weddings) when my cousin and his OH got married, they put in the invite that as they had a house and everything to go in it, they would prefer a monetary gift. That to me, and a lot of the family was extremely rude as they weren't exactly hard up! If they had of put a charity donation instead, then no one would have been offended. But with a christening, I suppose you could ask for monetary gifts, in the form of setting up a childs saving account and asking for monetary gifts to be paid into that account for when your DD is older. That would be a nice idea too, I think.0
