Really stupid question.... Are you sure there are no phone points anywhere in your house?

If not, first thing to do is to contact the seller and ask "Where did you plug your phone in?"

    Hi all,

I've also spoken to Talk Talk, who are adamant that there will be no connection charge at all 'no matter how much extra cable we have to install'- direct quote.

So, they're coming round on 17th. I shall let you know...

Result! At least you've got a human being coming around.

Just another vote in sky's favour - they never charged us for anything, and there wasn't a working phone line at the house.

Eight years old in North London? Yep, course there's a phone line. BT drove me insane on several occasions. I give up with them now and am with sky (who've been brilliant).

Not sure what Talk Talk are going to do, they don't lay any 'cable'. BT Openreach do.

Talk-Talk are talking b/s with regards to 'no connection fee'. They told my friend this when he switched from VM to them. He had had a BT line in the past, but it could not be used and had to be renewed. It cost him £160.

They will visit and say that they will ask BT openreach to provide a line and then give you a quote.

The OP already has a quote to install a line - £7k!

TT are suggesting they can do it for free, and I call BS.

Just a thought but as your neighbour is a Virgin customer could you get them to use 'recommend a friend' I think Virgin pay £50 for a successful recommendation.

VM simply said they couldn't serve us, as they only do fibre optic and there was no underground cable.

Was this what you were told on the phone or as a result of VM coming out to do an inspection? It would be a "spotter" who would come out and assess the situation. Sometimes when the spotters come out you can find that you can get VM no problem, standard installation fee. It seems like their internal database isn't always so up-to-date when it comes to new builds.

    Take a look at:

....Virgin's high-speed broadband is fibre into your home & thus instrinsically (usually) faster than BT....

Just to correct you there, VM's service is NOT fibre to the home (FTTH) its a HFC (hybread fiber coper) network. in other words fiber to the street cab coper to your home (exactly the same as BT infinity). the only difference between vm and bt is the final coper cable on VM is much higer quality single core co-ax coper instead of bt's twisted pair.

Also the beardy one (branson) dosnt actually own VM. it is actually owned by the american cable giant liberety global who licence the virgin brand.
