I'm not sure how current this is but looks like you should sign on to get the support to get into work0 -
Thanks to everyone who responded with advice, i cant reply to them all individually but i will write a cover letter explaining my 2 year gap and accompany it with my CV because what i have been doing currently has failed so i hope if i get an interview with them knowing my situation then it would be less of the bombshell it has been when previously asked.
For the person who advised me to lie, thanks but no thanks. I would like to keep what little dignity i have left and not become even worse of a person.
The person who asked if i was American, well my mother is American so maybe that is where my Americanisms come from.
there are worse things to be than a liar
fact is i wasn't suggesting you lie, any employment advisor will tell you that unless you are asked out right you do not have to volunteer info especially bad info, as said many applications don't ask and many more do not ask for a minute by minute account of your emplyment history with missing gaps filled in, my present job did not ask for that much detail, so why would you offer to give them that if you think it's going to stop you from getting the job...it would be like me getting the job Ihave now, then turning into work the first day and say by the way i was in prison for dealing drugs 2 years ago!, I can understand if the question is asked you then have to say but on a CV you can leave it out and not mention it unless the job asks, I really don't know why you and others like you say prison stops them from working.0 -
You are clearly unaware of the law regarding disclosure of prison sentences. Anybody receiving a prison sentence of more than 30 months has to disclose it to employers for the rest of their life, it will NEVER be a spent conviction.
Yes they could lie, but guess what ? If they get found out then they have committed another criminal offence by not disclosing and can go back to prison for it.
what a load of rubbish, if asked the question then yes but not if they do not ask they do not have to disclose anything :rotfl:0 -

For 30+ months imprisonment your conviction is never spent, but you don't need to disclose this fact unless asked. You can be dismissed and prosecuted only if you lie. Most jobs will have a form you need to fill in asking if you have any unspent criminal convictions.0 -
OP you say you are doing well in interviews until you mention your stretch. If this is putting them off try offering an unpaid trial to the interviewer for you to show them you are capable of the job.

There have been some changes to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act this year that have altered the length of time that a conviction needs to be declared before it becomes 'spent'.

You said they should lie if asked, I was merely pointing out that if asked then they will be committing a criminal offence if they do lie about it.Its amazing how these banks can't even do simple calculations correctly..............0 -

Assuming OP is an adult, having to wait 7 years for his conviction to be spent is still a long time. His offense isn't minor so it's likely the gov can't stop employers from making a criminal background check. Oh well.0 -
I lost sympathy with Scuffer when he said he wasn't signing on so as to avoid costing the taxpayer any more money! It's a bit late to think about that now, and they let you out so now the slate is clean. As for the prision record, you might as well lie about it, what have you got to lose?I didn't ask to be born!0
