If you can stretch i'd go for a twin turbo 335d. It will pull the tarmac off the ground whilst giving you better mpg than a panda.

How come diesel drivers then complain about fuel prices?

Wouldn't have any of them. Quality from the German marques is at best average now. Personally I'd go for a Jag every time

Despite the personal preferences of many here, the reality is that all 3 of those cars are very good. The A3 is smaller than the other two - Audi's car in that sort of class is the A5 coupe.

The A3 competes more directly with the BMW 1-series and Mercedes-Benz A-Class (and others).

Because unlike most other countries in Europe, diesel in the UK is more expensive than petrol.

    I get just over 52mpg from my 320d M-Sport

I doubt you get those figures in congested traffic conditions, and if you are performing the car then it is going to be little different from the petrol version.
What I meant about the price is that at 52mpg, the change of price is still going to deliver a lot of miles per tank.
On another forum a guy is claiming he drove from Bham to Manchester and was doing just shy of 90mpg in a Golf at full motorway speeds.

No no - I'm not suggesting anything crazy like that.

I am hardly ever in a town - never mind a congested city.

My overall average is 52mpg and I regularly travel between Aberdeen and Dover easily on one tankful (61 litres) - thats mostly motorway cruise-control stuff as much as possible at a legal 70mph on the Sat-Nav (73mph on the speedo)

To return to the OP's original question - all 3 have their followers and all 3 can do a good job - but he /she didn't tell us what use they are going to put the car to.

I would also agree that the Audi A3 is not a direct match in size or comfort with the other 2 vehicles.

The new TSI or TFSI (from vag) engines have really impressive figures actually. I think i've seen low 40s mpg and 0-60 times comparable to a 330d (ie sub 7).

I'm not promoting the 0-60 time sells a car but its a good indication of power delivery as i dong have that to hand.

Plus they're turbo so you still have some of the diesel torque poke which i love!

With VAG trying to get the best economy out of this engine it tends to run very very hot, which results in them melting the top of the pistons.

The Factory in Germany's response.(from the horses mouth)

"English unleaded fuel is not of good quality", to get the best out of these engines you have to put that Superduper unleaded crap in" another extra cost

I think you mean they require low sulpur fuel, they run fine on 95 ron although I put 98 in mine.
