I am on SIM only.

My contract is up and looking at options, i am with 02 and have been since they were BTcellnet, so i am happy with their service.

The two deals i am looking at is:

02 - 12 month, Unlimited text and calls 1GB data £16pm

Tesco - 12 month, 1000 mins, 5000 text 1GB data £10pm

My question would be what is tesco like to use as a provider, customer services etc, obviously its the £6 a month saving thats making me think of changing.

  • I have just migrated from o2 to Tesco Mobile, porting my number.

I have an iPhone 4S and I was on a SIM only deal with o2, giving me, I think 300 minutes, unlimited texts and 500MB data per month. This was costing me just over £21 per month on a monthly contract. My main concern was that the data allowance was tight for me, and I often ended a month by buying more data for £6. I went to a Tesco contract with 750 minutes, 5000 texts and 2GB data per month, which costs £12.50 on a monthly contract. Here is my experience.

    1) I contact o2 to unlock my phone. This went fairly smoothly.

    2) Buy SIM from Tesco. This was complicated because the Tesco Web site rejected all my cards, and I had to do it by telephone. This was a long call, setting up direct debit, etc. There was no problem with my cards.

    3) Contact o2 for PAC code. I did this in a 'chat' session. Obviously they put me through retentions, when I was offered a deal with 750MB data. I can't remember the other details, as I wasn't interested.

    4) I completed Tesco's online form to port my number, and choose a date for this this to happen, which was about 3 - 5 days in the future. This required a phone call to Tesco because the online form said the serial number of the SIM should have more characters than were on the SIM that arrived. I was told on the phone that I had to put extra characters in front of the SIM serial number that I had received. I did this and it worked.

    5) On nominated day I put the Tesco SIM in my phone and received a message straight away that there was a problem with the porting request and to phone them. I did this and got another porting date 5 days hence (there was a weekend in between).

    6) On new porting date I put Tesco SIM in my phone and find that someone else's number has been ported to me, and I keep getting calls to someone else. There are now three numbers to discuss. The original phone number of my Tesco SIM, the wrong number assigned to me, and my desired number to be ported.

    7) I phone Tesco at about 3pm and the problem is corrected by about 7pm on the same day. I verified that I was now making calls from the correct number, the number I had ported.

    8) I sent a few texts and found that my texts were puzzling my friends because they are arriving from a different number. I delve into iMessage settings and find that it is configured with the wrong port number, so I correct this manually.

    9) I go into the street, off my wifi, and find I have no data.

    10) I phone Tesco, and was told they would send me a configuration text message, and this could take up to an hour to arrive. No text arrives.

    11) One-and-a-half hours later I ring Tesco and was put through to someone who told me what configuration settings to put into my phone at Settings>Mobile>Mobile Data Network on my phone. This worked.

I'm wondering whether there is anything else I need to think about. I left o2 because I found them very inefficient. I had an issue a few months back and when I rang them I was told their lines were busy and they just cut me off. This happened several times over three days. I wasn't interested in being a customer of a phone company that can't speak to its customers on the phone! I was abroad at the time and actually wanted to by a roaming product, and wasn't able to. Tesco answer their phones quickly, in my experience so far, and their staff are helpful and courteous. The person in step 7) above even rang me back a few days later to confirm that I was happy. Globally, however, my experience has not been encouraging. Why didn't any of my cards work? Why do they provide a serial number that doesn't work in their own form? Why did it take three attempts to port my number? Why did I have to further battle to get the texting to work properly and battle again to have data?

I ported from Vodafone to Tesco Mobile in January. I had no problem setting everything up with Tesco Mobile. Customer Services seem efficient enough and when you do phone it's someone in the UK you speak to.

Number port went without a hitch on the day they said it would.

I moved from Orange to Tesco mobile last year - no problems at all.

My OH followed suit 3 months later, again no problems at all.

We are both on 10 quid SIM only and it's saving us a fortune!

Careful when cancelling your account with O2... they carried on charging me after I left because I didn't use the PAC code they provided. They said I was told if I didn't use it my account would remain active. I argued with them that I request a PAC code, I called to cancel the account and had made that clear during the call. After listening to my call they refunded everything I had paid that I shouldn't have.

Tesco are fab, never had an issue!

Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.

What data speeds are you getting on Tesco mobile? As it seems the speed is throttled.

Never found any issue with speeds being throttled. Highest I've achieved have been around 17mb.

I did a speed test in the same place as my friend on O2 - exact same results.

Who told you Tesco's speed was throttled?

I have read articles about it, my colleague is on Tesco and me O2, we had done a speed test side by side, he rarely sees 2mbs, where as mine was between 5-7mbs, 17mbs sounds like 4g ?
