No as my Wife's phone was only a few weeks old and I bought mine in September last year. My Wife's came with the latest software so I thought I would update mine.

Interesting - so both are now on Android 4.3?

Perhaps it's older S3 versions which have the problem.

Whats the budget? With the S5 due the price of the S4 may start to drop.

Dont get an S4 mini. You may as well get the old faithful S2.

Looking at all options at the moment - on contract with iphone (just finishing 2 years). But have looked at sim only/ buying handset or back onto contract again.

Am aware s4 is £400 + handset only, s3 £280 + - how far will price of s4 drop once s5 is released?

I would get a Nexus 5 for your budget. Much better than an S3 and no Samsung bloat.
