Printer buyers beware

if you look in the booklet with the printer it will tell you how to do a factory reset which resets the firware to factory aswell, follow that then follow instructions I posted to stop the updater retrieving the new firmware update. youtube has many video on there how to revert back to factory settings.0

Factory reset does not roll back the firmware, it merely returns all settings to the default state.
Once a firmware is updated there is no way the normal consumer can normally roll back to a previous version. First problem is to get hold of the previous version, second is to override the version checking routine in the current version. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. Hi' Nilrem post 18.
As the OP and to comment on your opening statement, when I engaged in the Online chat facility with an Epson tech advisor he quite clearly stated that Any cartridge can be used with Epson printers.
All these comments are interesting and again highlight the problems people have with printers and the price of ink. The solutions offered were tried by me before I posted this topic. I have had about 12 email exchanges with Epson tech regarding my accusation, and this has been strongly denied so no surprise there then. I have been given various reasons of perhaps why all 4 cartridges failed to be recognized at the same time the only possible thing not mentioned was the weather. I suggested that this issue has been posted on forums on the net but the obvious reply was we do not comment on forum speculation."Imagination is more Important than knowledge"0 -
Or just don't install any drivers and let Windows find them for you?
Although that may now find the latest set, which would be counter productive.0 -
Wish people would understand its not the drivers that check for authentic cartridges but the firmware on the printer (which gets updated as part of Epsons Update Checker).
If people are really that bothered and want to state the printer model then I can probably do something with the older firmware to bypass the version checking. It would be at your own risk though, I don't take responsibility if it bricks your printer.0 -
I hit the same problem with my Epson WF-3520DWF a couple of months ago - having been using compatibles since I bought it April last year. Without thinking, it offered a driver AND firmware update, and I clicked "Install" for both. All was OK until the next time I needed to change a cartridge - then it refused to recognise ANY of the installed cartridges, even ones that had been OK before the change! Epson customer service were useless, just said they only warranted their printer when genuine cartridges were used, could not even guarantee that installing genuine cartridges would get my printer going again!
Luckily I found I had an Epson Express guy nearby, he had a printer with the required genuine cartridges installed, we tried them in mine and it recognised them! I found Ebuyer was the cheapest place to buy Epson cartridges, so bought a set then kept an eye on eBay, got a good supply at a decent price. So far I've only printed 1 photo, and I'm sure the print quality is much better than with the previous compatibles.
On a different note, one of the online compatible suppliers that guarantees their cartridges will work are aware that Epson are playing, and reckon that once they are getting a supply of newly recycled cartridges, then they will again be loads cheaper than Epson.0 -
Oh I agree, but if it is the DRIVERS that are causing the update to the printer then you need to sort the root cause.Wish people would understand its not the drivers that check for authentic cartridges but the firmware on the printer (which gets updated as part of Epsons Update Checker).0 -
The Epson update I just checked out gets two files during the updater process. One is the driver update, the other is a firmware image file.
First step is to binwalk the image file to see how it is constructed.
Fun thing to do on a Tuesday

I bet a lot of Epson printers that will no longer work with compatibles get binwalked too. If mine was affected it certainly would be.0

Bought a new Epson XP212 a couple of months ago for a near £50 and have changed one "set up" cartridge for a generic one and so far no problems. I have not been advised of any software updates (yet) but I will certainly ignore them if I do!
As a matter of interest, where does one turn off auto updates on an iMac please?0
