Printer buyers beware

As the O.P. I read your varied comments, to vary the original T.C. By devious means is probably unlawful, proving it may be difficult. I spent about 20 mins with Epson online chat facility where there advisor assured me that any cartridge can be used with their printers, and he just ignored my experience backed up by my own online investigation. I am experiencing denial of service from my printer due to their policy of using this firmware upgrade trick. I too will never buy another Epson product."Imagination is more Important than knowledge"0

Just roll your computer back to a previous back up point. I had a similar issue with my HP0

Thanks for the thread OP. I'm looking at printers right now and Epson just dropped off my list.
Those of you that think it's to do with non Epson cartridges damaging printers need to have a serious rethink. They make all of their home printer profits on selling ink cartridges, not printers.Pants0 -

That will roll the whole computer back, not an ideal solution for everyone. There are tools out there to save and restore specified drivers. The Epsom user community will no doubt be providing an antidote too. OP should post some screen prints to convince the more sceptical among us.0 -
You will have to wait until the generic ink companies roll out new chips on their cartridges to overcome the problem.
Can you uninstall all of the Epson software on your computer (make sure epson download navigator has gone), run CCleaner to wipe any residue rom the registry, then reinstall from whatever disc you originally had and turn off automatic updates.
Or, just connect up the printer without the epson software and see if you can use it that way.
You could also try rolling back the drivers via device manager.Drinking Rum before 10am makes you

Oops looks like it may not just be the driver on the computer, but the firmware on the printer that gets auto updated. Now that IS sneaky.0 -
Epson have never said that their printers will work with other carts so it's unlikely to be a SOGA issue, because it was never part of the contract that it would work with them.
IIRC Epson (and most printer companies) have used chipped carts for something like 5-10 years now to prevent you using compatible carts, all they have done (from a legal point of view) is reset their printer to deal with the fact that compatible carts have got around that limit (I remember the compatible carts stopped working with R265's for around 6 months before new ones made it to market at one point).
I used to use compatible carts a lot, then found that my printers (various models, mainly epson) were typically dying of print head failure/blocked print heads at about 2 years old, at least the ones that used compatible carts...
Since then I've tended to use the real deal, as it's easier than replacing the printer every couple of years.0 -
My mother has an HP and I tend to order original ink for her as it's not astronomically priced - she lives far away I don't want to travel to investigate printer issues!0

I would simply uninstall the current drivers (With printer disconnected), do a registry clean (with a software such as ccleaner) after a restart, and a cleanup of old files.
disconnect form the internet (unplug Ethernet cable form back of machine) plug in printer install from the original software disc, then turn off automatic updates in the Epson software advanced settings or find the program updater and block it with windows firewall so it can do anything like search the internet and retrieve data.
plug everything back in connect to internet.
that should in affect allow the software to work but not the updating service allowing you to continue using pattern carts rather than OEM ones.0
