Many thanks to all who have replied so far. I have looked at all your suggestions and have narrowed the choice down to a Windows tablet. I already have a 7" android tablet, but I feel that the Windows version would probably suit the two of us more closely.
I have been rethinking the inclusion of Office and although it would be handy for both of us, do I really want my husband to "borrow" it rather than take his laptop when he is working away from home or want him wasting holiday time working?
I am really impressed with the Asus t100, but it only has 32GB (the 64GB is only available in the States at the moment) and I wonder how much storage is left on the tablet.
I'm not sure about Windows 8RT so may well count my pennies and see if I can afford a Surface Pro 2. A lot of money but possibly upgradeable OS-wise later. However, my works pension pays out later this month so it may be a nice retirement present!
I will go to the shops and play with some next week - in the meantime I would still be grateful to receive comments/advice.

Order the asus from poland and possibly germany, and it will come with a 500gb hd built in to the keyboard too, in addition to the emmc. F*ck knows why we get palmed off with 32gb.

Have a look at the Asus on Amazon Germany.

I remember looking at reviews on the Asus T100 with the 500GB drive in the keyboard, about a year ago, and thought that was exactly for me, but wasn't available at the time, so went for something else. I had actually forgotten all about the extra hard drive with the keyboard until you mentioned it. Absolutely disgusting that it's not available in the UK.

And in amazon France as well! Well, I think that would do it perfectly. It means I could back up my photos until I got home (I shoot in raw with my dslr - big files), edit them at home and then transfer to one of my external hds and dvd.
Only problem is I am not that fluent in French and not at all in German. I know it would be relatively easy to change the language on receipt of the tablet, but not sure about ordering. Also, would I be able to deal with Amazon.co.uk if anything went wrong?
Maybe I could do a 2-day trip to France and get it in Calais somewhere?
But why the ^%&* can't I buy this here!!!!
Many thanks for bringing this version to my attention.

Looking at some of the links on Amazon.fr am not so sure that it is readily available in France...one definitely says it's an import from Germany.

Anyway, before you think that this is definitely what you want, suggest strongly heading into a store that stocks the Asus T100 and checking it out in the flesh. Also check out other tablets and 10-11" tablets, convertibles and laptops to see what really would suit you. Take a notebook with you and note down details of what you like, and then look at reviews of your short list back at home.

No experience in this area, but I do know that French laptop keyboards are
ASERTY not QWERTY. So worth a check.

    .

That is what I intend to do this coming week. As you say, on paper it ticks all the boxes, but in reality it may not. My pension money doesn't get paid for another 10 days, so I have a fair bit of time to make a decision.
Also thanks for the tip re French keyboards - I have never noticed that when using hotel pcs over there - maybe they use English ones for the international customers ;).
