Recommendations for tablet please

I would really appreciate some guidance in buying myself a tablet. I travel quite a bit and take a fair amount of photos that I would like to view on a screen bigger than the camera's. I need a 10" tablet with a USB socket, memory card socket (sd micro) and hopefully a mini hdmi socket. I am finding that a laptop is just too heavy and bulky for airline travel along with camera and everything else so a tablet would be more convenient, especially on long haul flights.
My husband would also be using it but he would want to be able to use it for business at times.
Do the android systems have an office suite compatible with Windows Office and can you connect to a wireless printer?
If not, I will have to go for a Windows tablet, but am unsure about the differences between Windows 8RT and 8.1. Would I be able to upgrade to the next Windows if I wanted?
Any advice/suggestions welcomed.

Kingsoft Office is a free android app that is fairly compatible with MS Office, I think.
'Windows 8 RT' is the variety of Windows that runs on ARM processors, and is limited to Modern apps plus MS Office (which comes bundled with it).
Windows 8/8.1 tablets on the other hand can run all the same desktop programs that a laptop or desktop computer can.
Windows 8 can upgrade to 8.1 for free, and the 'Update 1' that is coming out in a few weeks will also be free. Beyond that it's not possible to know.0 -
There is the ipad and the almost as good, Samsung Galaxy. The latter do a 10" (mine is 8"). I could give you several links, but the one I do give, explains in better detail (imo) what you can expect from a Galaxy.
Yes it has a micro SD card and yes it has a USB port.

One thing I bought to compliment it was a vodofone mifi from Argos To be honest I couldn't get it to work, but thousands do, so it must be me. I have since learnt that I can purchase a SIM card from Ovivo for £20, this will give 1000mb of data usage every month for NO extra money, all I have to do is to replace the sim and change some settings. The link for that is:-

As for photo's, there is a free app called :-

now this is cool to use a young persons vocabulary. Depending on which setting you have, when you press and hold the shutter down, the tablet will take photo after photo repeatedly. You will see for yourself on the above link.
Let us know what you decide and ask away if you want to know more.
PS, there are umpteen other makes available as you will find out. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Asus t100 for £300 or a surface pro if you can afford it. Forget ipads, they're toys. There is also a dell venue 11 or the hp omni if you want something with a nice screen and cant quite push to a surface0

The Acer Iconia A500 fits your needs. You can also use the free Andropen office from google play store. Any android tablet will do wireless printing. You should be able to update the operating system to the latest android. Amazon still sell the A500.0

As your husband will be using it for business, might be worth considering something with a keyboard.
This is probably your best bet.

Or a lightweight laptop might be worth considering, although looks like full size HDMI port and SD card, rather than micro SD, however plenty of storage.

Tablets are all very well (I like my iPad) but not for serious work. Until its little HD died, I had an Acer Aspire 10" Netbook, which was brilliant. It did everything a full-size laptop would do, but it was effectively the size of a tablet. I pack light for trips on the bike, but the Acer took up no space at all. It took me a long time to get used to typing on it (the keys are small and I have shovels for hands) but once I got used to it I was fine. It had an SD card slot, USB port, the usual connectivity.
Damn sight cheaper than a tablet, as well. Mine was around £200. If the HD hadn't died, I'd be using it today and wouldn't have bothered with an iPad.If someone is nice to you but rude to the waiter, they are not a nice person.0 -
If you want quick boot up - avoid Netbooks - get a Tablet - the difference being that a Tablet has Solid State memory rather than an old magnetic hard disk..
Also Netbooks are limited to either a 1.0Ghz or a 1.6Ghz dual core processor whereas decent tablets tend to have quad core
The main downside to a tablet tends to be the batteries (they are not always user replaceable)0 -
Many thanks to all who have replied so far. I have looked at all your suggestions and have narrowed the choice down to a Windows tablet. I already have a 7" android tablet, but I feel that the Windows version would probably suit the two of us more closely.
I have been rethinking the inclusion of Office and although it would be handy for both of us, do I really want my husband to "borrow" it rather than take his laptop when he is working away from home or want him wasting holiday time working?
I am really impressed with the Asus t100, but it only has 32GB (the 64GB is only available in the States at the moment) and I wonder how much storage is left on the tablet.
I'm not sure about Windows 8RT so may well count my pennies and see if I can afford a Surface Pro 2. A lot of money but possibly upgradeable OS-wise later. However, my works pension pays out later this month so it may be a nice retirement present!
I will go to the shops and play with some next week - in the meantime I would still be grateful to receive comments/advice.0 -
Do you just want a bigger screen area to just view pictures or do you want to run Photoshop type programs?
iOS iPad has the Camera Connector kit for the older models with 30pin connector and you have some photo apps. But you'll need yet another adapter for HDMI.
Windows 8 RT - dead end, IMHO. Don't expect much beyond 8.1 and there's hardly any apps on the Microsoft store
Windows 8.1 - I like the HP Envy X2 and Asus T100, and you can install regular Windows programs. They're just a bit underpowered with Atom processor and small SSD capacity. The T300 is more like a laptop in capacity, if it comes to Britain.0 -
I just want to be able to connect my camera either direct or via a usb hub to the tablet to view the pictures I have taken and delete the dross. Editing proper I will do on my return home.0
