I like jack Monroe's blog and the recipe book looks good but she's only doing what people did successfully years ago and you can pick up loads of old cook books in charity shops that will give you ideas for example Delia's frugal food is worth a look. I'm not so keen as I'm veggie but plenty of ideas on how to cook cheap cuts of meat and offal in there. I think my copy was 20p from a car boot.
I think the key is realising you can substitute ingredients e.g bottled lemon juice for fresh lemons, frozen or tinned veg for fresh. I much prefer frozen to tinned. You can cut out non essential herbs and spices. You can sour milk with lemon or vinegar as a substitute for butter milk etc. I use pickled garlic and chilli sauce regularly in recipes instead of garlic and chilli
Just don't be too intimidated to experiment in the kitchen as long as it's edible it doesn't matter if you decide never to cook it again.0 -
How are you doing this week?0

Hi all, thanks for the continued support :-) sorry I haven't been around much. Been at work past couple of days and not got back until past 7pm so exhausted.
Had last (free) dental appointment today, yay. Also been doing my Roamler tasks (thank you so much to the person who suggested it!) and earned £18 so far! Still lots more tasks to do, I'll probably do some tomorrow. I haven't had much luck with FieldAgent though. None of the locations are close enough to me and they don't update often
Earned about £20 on TBC so far, still pending of course. Also, remember I said I'd switched to Npower? Cancelled that for now as they bill after being with them for a month plus I'll have my last bill from BG so I don't want to risk it! Getting two bills in the month I give birth would be too much stress I think. So I'm going to wait until the last bill with BG.
Looking to sell some stuff on Ebay, including the memory card that I bought for my camera to bring to birth. I didn't realise that it wasn't compatible with my camera, doh! I need to buy the right one ASAP but no actual money to do so. Don't wanna use my Nectar points eitherstuck! Scared to list the memory card because I want to at least break even for what I paid for it!
My friend has offered me pay to write for a project he's doing, so just need to send him some of my previous stuff.
Hmm, that's it for now really. I'm getting there :-)
Oh, and I will look into matched betting but I need to be REALLY careful and wait until I have some money. Still comping. I use Roboform and the ticking/skipping process which speeds it up. I find it addictive lol. Hopefully I have my first win soon!
Off to do this week's Adpoints and enter some more comps before Easties comes on :-) (I sit in the 'living room' on the rug to watch it on the tv instead to save data).New single Mum & student Nurse working for our future.

Also, the £500 from the ATL fund came through the other day and paid my rent so huge weight off my shoulders :-) next month should be absolutely fine because I've been back at work, and then I should have bubs soon so should get the benefits to help.New single Mum & student Nurse working for our future.

I have read this thread with great interest and rarely become angry about others comments as people are fully entitled to their opinions but I had to respond to these nasty judgmental comments as not only are they uncalled for, unhelpful and totally appalling but I feel that they are judging the OP when in fact it takes a great deal of courage to come on here and ask for help so here goes..........anotheruser wrote: »But is it fair to bring a baby into the world when you have no real way to support it? It seems you can't even support yourself at the moment
who are you to make this decision? Suggesting abortion? really!!! !!!!!!
You need to get some real help, not from some internet forum. Well were should she go then.......Saturn?
If you don't want to be judged, don't post. The only one judging her is YOU
People WILL judge on the information you give, your writing style and even username - a common and sad way society is these days. Again this is you being the judgmental on and fulfilling your own prophecy of the 'sad society' YOU are living in!
I'd be interested why you think a baby needs it's own drawers when the parent is struggling to pay even the basic of bills. Should she balance the child's clothes on her head then?
Perhaps you do not see yourself as a "kid" but young 20 year olds certainly (on the whole) do not act like mature adults. The amount of car crashes, binge drinkers and such is a testament to this.
I am not saying you are one of them, but I did the most/fastest growing up from when I was 18/19 until about 23ish.
Sounds like you still have a fair amount of 'growing up' to do. I was married in my early twenties and 'trying' for a baby. Going through various fertility tests at 24 and then through two years of the adoption process when at the tender age of 26 I became a mummy to two wonderful children. I don't drink or smoke and just to turn your baseless statistics on their head my brother is 18 and had a very serious car crash last year when a (shock horror) middle aged lady was texting at the wheel and wrote him off the road whilst she was doing 80 miles an hour!!!
But the father had left you, and you were in the middle trimester stages of the pregnancy yes? Not exactly the wisest time to get out new contracts for things that aren't REALLY needed. But as you say, you can't turn back time so just remember for future learning. Patronising.......much!
Being self-sufficient isn't what you were when you paid rent to your parents.
Doing what you are sort of doing now is being self-sufficient... not relying on anyone else but yourself to survive. Ok so you have never relied on anyone in your life then? What about the bank?
You don't have to be a Christian to get help from the church. A local one near me had a house for people just like you, which was bill free to help people get themselves on their feet. You don't have to become a member, say you believe in God, sing or even pray. But make time to go and see some as they may also know of other places that people here haven't thought of. They will be local too. People like you........!!!!!! get real it's not the 1920's
Living with your dad would be a much better move as it's been proven in the past that living alone costs far more than as part of a household. In your opinion as your judgments have already made clear
Hardly :P While we are not dissimilar in age, you are certainly not from my generation but that of the one below, which I do pity as much of what has happened isn't directly your fault.
However I haven't noticed a real rise in costs in the last 10 years or so. Perhaps only in gas/electric (maybe +£300 over the 10 years) and petrol. Tell me.....is it cold up there on your pedestal?
I realise you have a lot of support here, I am surprised nobody has called troll, but I am certainly on the other side of the fence. I think it might be fair to say you are the troll here.
Too many kids these days have children because they want a baby, without actually fully going through the processes of what having a baby means. Parents are all too helpful to be grandparents so the kids can still go out and party.... not exactly the best skills for being a parent. Please read my previous points with relation to the hard work and pain we had to go through to get our children. BTW I don't like party's.
As I have nothing more to offer, I probably won't be replying but good luck to you and seriously - look at church, not just one.

Any luck with any of those yet?0 -
Hello all! Sorry I haven't been around, been quite busy with work then been back at uni this week.
Sooo ..
I had bags and bags of clothes that I hadn't seen for months, some even years! So I washed them and sorted through them. The ones I didn't want, I decided to take advantage of the eBay free listing and put them up. Ended up making about £60! Of course, about £20 of that paid for postage and then there's the blimmin' eBay fvf (which I haven't been billed for yet but kinda dreading it, lol) and the Paypal fees. Still, it's profit at the end of the day because the clothes were sitting there in bags uselessly.
I still have about 43 active listings and some interest/bids so more money is on its way :-)
I also have more clothes/bags/shoes to sell, which I'll leave until the next free listing period.
As for the person who recommended Roamler to me - can I hug you please?!?! I LOVE it! Been completing my tasks and, since I downloaded it, made £24! (plus £4 earlier today). It hasn't cost me anything but time because I have a travelcard, and it was instant to transfer the money with no fees. Very impressed. I'm on level 2 with 1000 XP so only about 790 until the next level, which brings more tasks and money
Field agent doesn't seem to have anything close enough to me ever, though, and it disappears fast
As mentioned before, I have about £43 pending on TCB, but obviously they take ages to confirm it so I don't see it as real money yet.
Still into my comping (but had a break from it this week as been busy) and I'm thinking to try matched betting soon. Also, I need to get around to completing my surveys and applying for mystery shopping. Still haven't got through that article, lol!
Oh, and my uni does a lot of studies/research and they invite us to take part. There's one running and they give you £30 and reimburse travel fees so need to give the lady a ring asap.
That's it really :-) really fun making/saving money, isn't it?! I've been building my savings back up and I'm thinking about opening an ISA. That way I can have a nest egg for a house deposit in the future, and a nest egg for emergencies.
Oh, and I've barely had my heating on so hopefully it won't be too high!New single Mum & student Nurse working for our future.
