Is there any budget paint that gives good coverage?

Do they allow non-trade people into these trade paint places? I would most probably have to take my young daughter with me so it would be quite obvious that I'm not a decorator by trade.
I'm still not ready to paint, I got half the room stripped yesterday but it's the moving furniture from one place to another that takes up the time.0 -
I'm a dulux fan too. The finish is superb and it's very hard wearing.
Can I ask though what type of paint to use to paint an asbestos soil pipe? We've replaced all the guttering with Upvc but not the soil pipe as the connecters to the toilets will have to be changed and we are refiiting the bathroom next year which involves moving one loo so we didn't want to do the job twice. OH has scraped off the old flaking paint (in the rain to stop any dust!) and when it stops raining will paint it.

If its already been painted, and I would presume it had gloss on it.
If Hubby has scrapped all the flaking paint off, and you just want to tidy it up till you get a replacement.
Then I would undercoat first, afyer giving it a sand down, then use gloss on top.
if you werent going to change in, then I would suggest you use exterior undercoat and gloss, but if its just a tidy up, then you could get a way with the ordinary undercoat/gloss.0 -

Yes, flimsy, anyone can walk in, and like poppy says you get nectar points, and ask them if they have any spare vouchers under the counter lol.
This is a voucher that gives you an extra 500 points.:D
Dont forget they charge you VAT, but they normally give 10% off for a cash customer.
TBH, its cheaper to buy 'dulux white and colours from your usuall DIY sheds, but for 'Gliddens' which you can only get at the Dulux decorating centre, there is fantastic savings, even with the VAT.
Like I said I use the contract for a freshen up to sell, or as a base coat, and infact its brilliant on ceilings too.
I have had to paint about 7 ceilings on this job, I had to seal them first cause of the nicotene, but then I used the gliddens contract on them afterwards, they have come up brilliant white, and look fantastic.
But vinyl paint is more hardwearing, and more suitable for walls, but you could you the contract on the new plaster as a base coat, to also seal the new plaster, then finish with your vinly paint of your chosen colour.0 -

Thanks for the advice but when OH finished scraping off yesterday he founds a few weak parts that with a little poke his finger might go through - so at this very moment he's putting up a new soil pipe.

Another quick question if I may. I prefer the finish of matt paint but I have heard that you shouldn't put it over silk. In some of my other rooms i have put matt over silk and it has gone crackled whereas in other rooms it is fine. What's the best for me to buy?
Decorating has come to a bit of a standstill as I am poorly, but I did go in Wickes today and I like the colour of one of the trade paints so will go with that. The nearest Dulux place is too far for me at the moment.0 -
Focus has 3 for 2 offers on all paint I think but in 2.5 size tins. You may walk and you may run

And every time the storm and the soul wars come
You just keep on walking0 -

Hi Flimsy, yes that correct, you can paint silk over matt okay, but problems can arise like you have experienced doing it the other way round.
If your silk has been up for a few years, then normally a good rub down to get rid of the shine normally helps the matt to stick.
but if the silk is newish, it doesnt always work.
There is two options I have used over years, and both have worked.
1), rub down your walls anyway, then go over them with oilbased undercoat, dont use it straight from the tin, as its too thick and you will be labouring, pour some into a container and add white spirtit a bit at a time and keep stirring, so its like runny double cream, then do your cuttin in with the brush top and bottom, then roll the rest on, use an old roller, as you will have to throw it away afterwards, cost a fortune in white spirit to clean it.
leave for a couple of days, then paint with your matt.
2)Or you can use 'Soft sheen paint', which will cost you a fair bit of money, as you would need the same amount as if you were painting the walls anyway.
This counteracts the silk, and then you can go over with your matt.
hope this helps, any more probs let me know.:D0
