  • If you are a family of 5, assuming 3 are kids under 19, you should ask your water company about their vulnerable household (or similar name).

I have seen large families save a good 100 pounds if not a lot more.

I have a water meter and we are a family of 5 soon to be 6 and our meter costs us 14.50 a mth for water. Before we had a meter we were paying 25.00 a mth ;)

We use lots of water as they are small kids/babies and we have saved an awful lot of money :)
Wife to a great husband and mum to 4 fantastic kids 9,8,4,3 they drive me mad but I would do anything and give everything for my family :grinheart

Totally agree. However you cannot blame someone in a property with a low RV taking advantage of the situation that enables them to pay less by not being metered. When water was privatised the industry were given 10 years to come up with a fair system that did not depend on the stupid RV system for charging.

I pay less by not having a meter which allows me to have the following:

    2 Baths/ Long showers a day
Car washed 2-3 times a week
Garden watered daily usually with Hose/sprinkler when its not issing it down all the time
Washing Machine 2-3 Full Loads a week
Loo - Full flush each time- no option until new bathroom fitted.

Suits me :D, Before anyone has a go at me for wasting water, I live in Yorkshire, and the res's are full.

Your post simply demonstrates why meters should be compulsory.

    Please explain Why?
I am so glad they are not compulsary, and until that day comes I will use water as I wish, I pay the water rates, why shouldnt I use the water that is supplied to me as I see fit.
As mentioned I live in Yorkshire, not the south west and we have plenty of water, in fact currently an over abundance of the stuff.

We happen to have the most expensive water charges and sewerage charges in the UK, South West Water!

    Hi hapless
i am from south west 2,as you know our water bills are £800 +
we are a family of 5
    2 adults
    and
    3 teenagers
i asked southwest water about going on meter and they said it would cost me more than what i pay now
i think its to do with what sewerage tariff you are on ,as this is more than the actual bill for water
    saving 50p a day

Proud to be dealing with my debts :j

Like any other commodity, water charges should be based on consumption or the cost spread in a fairer manner across all customers.

It is nonsensical to base water charges for older properties on an Rateable Value system that was discontinued in 1989 and where, for the majority of properties, the value for RV purposes was assessed in 1972. The RV system takes no account of the occupant’s ability to pay, and in many cases does not reflect the value of the property.

Why for instance should a widow living alone in an identical house next door to you, pay a great deal more than you for water, and use much less, – simply because she moved there after 1989 and was forced to have a meter.

Apart from the above, it doesn’t provide people with any incentive to conserve water; as your posts amply demonstrate. Your reservoirs may have plenty of water at the moment, but might not always be so; and it is a national situation to consider; not just Yorkshire. The used water also needs to be processed in sewerage works which will need extra capacity if everyone uses water without restriction.

As said above, no criticism can be attributed to anyone taking advantage of a stupid system to pay less than they would on a meter; and most of us would do the same if it were to our advantage. It is the system that is wrong.

Some districts do have the ability to insist on fitting of meters on every property. IMO it would be much fairer if the Government made such a system mandatory across the country.

My last water bills was £113.99 including sewerage South West Water for both.
They told me that the bills would be higher too. But so far they have been a lot cheaper. The only reason the last one was so high was because hubby had to bath 5 times a week and his work clothes washed daily as he was on a pig farm. He's finished there now so the bills should drop.

The South West isn't short of water, but I strongly believe that you should pay for what you use.
