WOW! Now this is the kind of chitter chatter I love to wake up to.

I have been in work for an hour, updated my Travel Thread with a rant and decided bike riding into town has to end. Nothing to do with getting flashed by a camera yesterday.....

Some very interesting points have been made and some even more interesting lives shared with us all. I am thrilled that you are all talking about this and sharing stories, I almost don't know where to start....

    Right...

MrsGSR - don't feel stupid. Sometimes it's not easy to see links between certain areas that weren't foremost in your head. We are all here to learn from each other and discussions like this help us all take note of whats happening around us... And you were another veggie living on beans! :T...glad you are sharing things with your friends... they will know where to come when they are in need of a good financial talking too...

CEW - I would have done the same thing! Well done for sticking to your laurels as they say...

Shyspender - I want to know what your standard staples are? I must admit I haven't bought a ready meal / tinned soup for years although am known to be partial to a can of Tesco EDV spaghetti (disgusting I know) but everything is generally made from scratch.... ( all over that cat-pack stuffing!!! Made me chuckle. Dottie would tear my hands to shreds although I will try tonight and photograph the results for you all :p)....

Thrifty amazing insight into life behind the wall. Thank you for sharing this with us! Did you find all the CC and such like hard to get your head around? And making your own food aged 9-10 is pretty impressive - care to share what was on the menu when you were left to your own devises?..

However I see where you are coming from when you say people should bascially man up and learn. You are not being judgemental you are speaking common sense. Somthing that is lacking these days. Kids in school however will never learn something like this (money-management) unless it's taught to them. Applying mathematics etc is one thing, realising a budget needs to be put in place for monthly bills when you are paid weekly is another. Pre-empting pitfalls with running a car against going out on the weekend and getting bladdered is also another...

We live in a society of instant gratification. This is the main problem. There is no patience for growing our own food, we buy it in a packet. There is no patience in saving up for our first car, we get a loan. There is no patience in waiting for that new winter jacket, we put it on our CC...

If the yoof of today are taught patience and not instant gratifcation then planning for their OWN future against getting drunk every weekend might become a priority. Scare tactics might be the only way with some, not all, youth. Then mathematics might comes in handy, until then there is a possibility that calculating how many units of alcohol passed their limit they can handle might be the only mathematics available....

I am generalising here though, not all youth are like this and I certainly was not one of these yoofs.. I worked nearly full time through Uni, didn't drink, took packed lunched everywhere ( saddo) and supported myself. Not just because my parents couldn't - more because I was sh*t scared of debt. Simple as that.

£ashcow your post thrilled me no end. I would LOVE to learn to use my sewing machine in the comfort of my own home and mentioned it in my thread in January as one of those skills I need to learn. I think it's amazing to be self-sufficient. It's what I am aiming for. My own curtains, my own duvet cover in the pattern I want, vintage dresses that fit my shape... everything.. My family are a bunch of milners and dress-makers. was I taught??? Nope! In Australia my Aunt is a genius with the sewing machine as is my cousin.. I might rope them into teaching me a little...

I like what you are doing with your skills. This is amazing. Imagine pairing up with Crazy_Lady2009 and creating a network of skilled people within your neighbourhoods who will in turn pass on their skills to those less able to help them deal with the world we live in... we could start an epidemic?? I have an idea by the way... I shall share it soon...

And Crazy Lady I love your idea.. I wish I had a neighbourhood that I could invest in ( I feel like you Lotti). This is what I want to look forward to when I return from my travels... so whats the plan? Would you have people meet at your home or find somewhere willing to donate a hall for free? How would you raise funds..? I love the term "resilience schemes". I am going to google this...Do you think you might combine forces with the council person...? TELL ME MORE!!! I am excited by this - are you in London, I would visit and have coffee ( I mean herb tea) if you were.. :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:... I also admire your veggie more for even considering the marriage with a carnivore...:)

Right.. I have things to do apparently... defo checking in later ...

crazylady, I think your idea sound fantastic. I work in the charity sector and it is always difficult to write bids that are workable and sensible, but tick the boxes that the funder wants. I'm in the health sector and they want us to be able to measure impact. There have seriously been suggestions that we measure distress on a scale from 1 to 10 at the start of a session and again at the end to 'measure' the impact. I hope you will be able to get something going to help in some way.

Not much going on for me today. Came in to work early to get cracking on things. Didn't walk, although it looks like being a lovely day here, as I'm at another meeting/training session tonight for a voluntary role that I do. I picked up my glasses last night and am really happy with them. Same lenses re-used, but they were expensive enough even so. Still, I'm not much use without them.

I need some advice - a month or so ago I listed something on ebay and it sold. I posted it. So far so good. Then the buyer contacted me to say it hadn't been received. We waited a little while and it still didn't arrive so I had to refund the full amount incuding the £8 postage I paid. I waited a little while longer and on Monday submitted my claim to the post office for a lost parcel. I can only claim up to £20 and the item was worth more. Anyway, I got home on Monday evening and there was a card to say a parcel had been left with my neighbour. It was the ebay parcel, returned to sender. Apparently it had been waiting at the collection office for the buyer to pick it up. A card had been left but after so long the uncollected parcels are returned. So what do I do? I claimed on the PO in good faith. Will they pay up or do they keep records about non-delivered parcels (it was just 2nd class, not signed-for). Can I relist it or will the previous buyer smell a rat if I do that? Advice welcome as I have done nothing wrong but others may be suspicious.

Have a good day everyone. Keep on going.

chickadee - I would come clean and email the buyer and say that the parcel has been returned to you and will be relisted. Then contact the PO and tell them to cancel the claim.

Today will be a SFD but I won't claim it until the day is done. AVON delivery due this morning but I won't be packing it up for delivery until tonight, loads of very irritating work to do today (redoing things due to the incompetence of others) and I just can't be bothered to start on it.

Hey all. This is a quick post to cheer you all on into March's challenge! My computer is still down but getting a replacement next week free from my brother who recycles his old ones my way! Have missed everyone and not being part of the challenge this month has been very strange! I miss you all!!!

Budgets are on track and am still firmly on the wagon. Debt dropped below the 5K mark which feels great and even secured some overtime over the next month. Kat will be very proud :D

Anyhow - over and out for now! Keep up the great work!!! Hugs xxx

Good morning everyone! I'm on day 2 and my final day of ME time, lol. I have spent today. I got myself some multi vits and am now 17.75 poorer. However, they should perk me up a bit, till my body can do for itself.

I too thought it was a really interesting discussion yesterday, particularly as many of us have kids. At least we can be safe in the knowledge that some of them will be taught the value of money. Mine are sick to the back teeth of me bleating on, but it is so necessary.

Thriftylass -really interesting to hear your take on it, regarding germany. It's things like this, that make this forum a fab place :)

I did the shred again last night and will stick with it now, I felt great.

I also did spend a quid yesterday on a day trip for me and my little man to Birmingham-50p each return, lol. Chiltern railways always have this offer on every year and it's on now for travel from 10th March -4th April.

Have a good day everyone and keep going :T

I'm going to visit friends and family in London for a few days next week and have planned that into my budget, £100 sounds a lot but I've factored Oyster card funds into that too and it's unlikely I'll spend that much so the excess will go towards holiday fund.
