Can I break BT contract if they keep overcharging me?

Hi,
I was overcharged by £500 or so last December as they were charging me for two broadband contracts instead of one - quite a lot over I'm sure you'll agree for a home deal. They refunded me the money. Just before that bombshell, I had signed up for a years unlimited broadband with them but in the last two months I have been receiving emails from them to warn me that I have gone over my 1GB limit (who signs up for a 1GB allowance these days?). I have called them at least twice about this. They say something along the lines of "well, I really can't understand that email as you clearly do have an unlimited tariff, but don't worry its an email error and you won't get charged for going over the limit".
Well, my bill came in yesterday and I have been charged (a lot) for going over my allowance. They are suggesting that I increase my monthly payments, as they do. So I wrote in yesterday about this and got an autoreply this morning to say "If you want to subscribe to BT sport and so on...blah blah" i.e. a totally irrelevant sales pitch not addressing the issue in any way whatsoever.
I simply can't trust BT anymore to do their job and run their services properly. I actually can't imagine how a company of that size can become so utterly useless. But anyway, I'm signed up to these fools for another 7 months or so. Can I get out with a "not fit for purpose" or something - does anyone know please?
Many thanks,
Jim

Try emailing the CEO office. Use google to find it as the link to the obvious site giving CEO email addresses gets blocked by MSE for reasons I can't fathom. I'll post it below in case they've removed the block...

I'd use this contact myself for starters..
BT Retail Ms Libby Barr Managing Director
I've found this technique to work well with a number of companies in the past including BT.0 -
I think you already know the answer. If we could all walk away from minimum term contracts due to incompetence, there would never be a problem. Sadly, the answer is no you are in it for the duration, for better or worse.
Since your experience with them is hardly unusual, it begs the question why you were so foolish in the first place in making the decision to sign up. To be fair, most firms go in phases of ineptitude, and you'll read on here the ongoing incompetence of a wide range of telcos - you'll never ever find the best, but the least worst is the one to strive for!
Vote with your wallet - give your notice 1 month before the minimum period ends, and use this time to research the alternatives and transfer numbers or services if required.0 -
Well, I signed up for a year and then shortly after the deal commenced, BT started messing up really badly. Not sure it was a particularly foolish decision on my part. I mean, you have to sign up with someone don't you?
I know people do get out of these contracts as my son got out of a 12 month mobile deal after a few weeks a while back - and he kept the phone too. I just wondered if anyone had had experience of doing it with BT.
I'll try the CEO as suggested - thanks for the advice.
