Not officially released in the UK yet, and not an awful lot of support, yet. Once they launch it in the UK, and it can do a few more things, it'll get more popular but for now you're on the cutting edge with the USA.

You can watch YouTube on your tv via a Wii (and other games consoles, I imagine).

Yes, also Playstation3 (&4) as well as via SMART tellies and many Blu-Ray players. Nothing new or unique I agree.
  • I don't have those other devices so this is ideal for me. I've had this since Saturday and does work very well via my Android phone. Watched a very rare episode of Just good Friends that I didn't know even existed and a short film Laurel and Hardy that I've never seen.
    I love it!!!

You can do all that with just your PC, of course.

The point of this wee thing isn't just playing YouTube, as above, lots of devices can do that. The point is throwing, wirelessly, what's on your computer screen, onto the TV screen. So you're controlling it from, say your laptop on the sofa. You can view anything that's inside a Chrome tab on your computer, for example. People have been crying out for a way to connect their laptops to their TVs wirelessly for ages - this does just that (though in YouTube and certain others, it gets the video direct from the web rather than thru your laptop).
  • i got a pair of CromeCasts for 2 TVs in the house.

It works well with youtube, however I cant seem to get it to work with Chrome on the PC - i installed the extension but it wont connect. :(

Main reason was you can choose the video from youtube with the ipod, iphone etc. Saves putting kids DVDs in the TV all the time, most of their stuff is on youtube

I think you need a good graphics card in your laptop for the Chrome tab sending to work IIRC... And of course a good WiFi connection.

thanks - maybe thats it then - its a laptop PC which is about 5 years old. the wifi should be OK - its all in the same room and have no probs with all other sorts of devices using wifi. chromecast works fine from my mobile phone/ipods using youtube (which was the main reason for purchase)

I've been watching very carefully for the release of Google's Chromecast here in the UK. Reports in the Telegraph suggest it will begin to sell in the UK from the beginning of March, and an announcement from Currys said that they intend to sell it from the 1st March. Google on the other hand have denied that any date has been fixed for its release.

I'm holding out on buying Apple's TV until I see what happens. I basically want Chromecast or the Apple TV to stream movies and back up TV when available.

Has anyone any information about what is happening. I'd have thought that if Currys, and presumably Amazon were to sell Chromecast they'd alread have gotten their supplies and that word would have leaked out that way.

As a moneysaver I don't wat to spend £100 if I can get away with £30 ish
